A long time ago I was in one of the towns while it was raining. As I approached the tavern a player greeted me and told me to get out of the rain. He apologized for the lack of a fireplace and offered me food and drink. He was role-playing the owner of the tavern. It was my first experience with someone who could play a role like that.
