Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks has commented on downloadable content for the studio’s upcoming RPG Fallout 3, saying the decision is still “up in the air.”

In an interview to be published on CVG, Hines said the studio is focused exclusively on producing the game, and that the decision won’t be made until Fallout 3 is content-complete. “How much of it or what we would do if anything is still up in the air,” he said. “We had the same approach with Oblivion, which is if we fuck this up, nobody’s going to want to download anything for it anyway. So let’s focus on the first thing we’re doing, get that absolutely right and then we’ll have time for the other stuff.”

Adding that content addition has to stop at some point during the game’s development, he said, “Every time you touch the game you’re breaking it so at some point you do stop on the content side and just focus on polishing and bug testing and so forth. At that point, it may be something our content folks start to look at.”

Bethesda, which acquired the Fallout IP from original developer Interplay earlier this year, is currently developing the next chapter of the post-nuclear RPG series for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms. Fallout 3 is scheduled for a fall 2008 release.
