Apocalypse, the final DLC release for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, will serve up two new maps, two old maps and a Dieselpunk zombie nightmare set in the First World War.
Described by Treyarch studio chief Mark Lamia as “the perfect culmination of our efforts,” Apocalypse, the grand finale to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, is just a couple of weeks away. The DLC will include four multiplayer maps, two new and two “fully reimagined”: On the new side of the coin we have “Pod,” a failed 70s-era Utopian community set on a cliff in Taiwan that offers frantic action across rooftops and through multi-level interiors, while “Frost” rocks out in a snowy European city split in half by a canal; coming from under the heat lamp are “Takeoff,” based on the Black Ops First Strike DLC map “Stadium,” that places players on a remote launch site in the middle of the Pacific, and “Dig,” an adaptation of the World at War map “Courtyard,” in which combatants battle across two archaeological digs in Afghanistan.
More multiplayer maps is nice, but what’s really interesting about Apocalypse is Origins, a new Zombie mode that drops the four heroes of the very first Zombies map – Tank, Nikolai, Takeo and Rictofen – onto a stylized First World War battlefield that’s been overrun by hordes of zombies. The new Zombie mode will offer supernatural “Wonder Weapons,” a diesel-powered drone, a Mark IV tank and a new perk machine and power-ups, but players will have to stand against more than just zombies – a “1000-foot-tall robot abomination” is also on the scene to make things really interesting.
That actually sounds like a lot of fun, and it makes me wonder why Treyarch doesn’t just give up on all this World at War/Black Ops nonsense and make a game about enemy soldiers from different historical eras teaming up to fight zombies. Hey, I’d buy it. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2: Apocalypse arrives on the Xbox 360 on August 27 for 1200 Microsoft points. Release dates for other platforms will be announced later.
