Black Ops 7’s Zombies might reignite my appreciation for Call of Duty

The launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 likely has many lapsed players wondering if they should give the latest instalment a try – including me. I was a big fan of older Black Ops titles, and the newest addition has me ready to dig back into the franchise, particularly thanks to Ashes of the Damned.

Zombies, like many fans, have always been the highlight of the franchise for me, and the rounds-based Zombies mode that Black Ops 7 promises could prove to be the best experience yet. Here’s a deep dive into the appeal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7’s Zombie mode.

The Escapist recaps

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will release in full on November 14, 2025, giving fans a new look at the beloved franchise.
  • Much to the excitement of many former players, Black Ops 7 will include rounds-based Zombies, promising bags of adrenaline-packed, nerve-wracking action and a variety of map types.
  • The first Zombies map to tear into with Black Ops 7 will be Ashes of the Damned, offering a vast, multi-layered experience that’ll test even the most seasoned of Zombies players.
  • The theming, narrative, and style of action that the Black Ops 7 Zombie experience offers may be enough to entice survival horror enthusiasts into the Call of Duty fanbase.

While Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will have a wealth of standard single-player and multiplayer content to explore, the mode that I’m most concerned with is the Zombies mode.

As a huge survival horror lover, it’s always been the part of Call of Duty that’s appealed to me the most. The military shooter vibe isn’t always a hit, but mowing through hordes of undead, shambling ghouls with well-designed weapons? Count me in.

Details about the Black Ops 7 Zombies mode started popping up well before the launch day, with the official Call of Duty site shining a light on what players could expect, both narratively and mechanically.

The first Zombies map that players will be able to explore in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is the Ashes of the Damned, popping up at launch. It’ll be multi-layered, with plenty of different environments to pick through alongside teammates.

Ashes of the Damned isn’t just one big map – although it is being described as the biggest rounds-based Zombies map in the franchise’s history – it’s several unique environments, all tied together with fog-drenched roads.

Variety is key with the survival horror niche. No matter whether you’re sinking your teeth into a Call of Duty zombies map or something like Cronos: The New Dawn, environments that change and adapt as you progress help to keep things unsettling and add to building dread.

Instead of the same areas and themes being pasted over and over, varied maps with different sections help to keep things consistently unnerving. You never know what’s going to be around the corner or whether a seemingly safe area is actually safe – and this is exactly what I’m hoping for with Ashes of the Damned.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is set to launch on November 14, 2025, giving fans of the franchise a fresh mountain of content to sink their teeth into. While many are sure to be focused on the single-player campaign and fast-paced, frantic multiplayer experience, I’m sure I won’t be alone in getting hyped for the Zombies mode on launch day.
