Crimson Desert release date, gameplay trailers, combat info, and more

It’s hard to remember a game with a more anticipated release date than Crimson Desert that isn’t from an established franchise. Developer Pearl Abyss has presided over its Black Desert Online MMO for years at this point, but it’s turning its efforts to the kind of single-player RPG that feels like we dreamt it up.

From multiple playable characters, to a huge world to explore, massive bosses to fight and even the chance to pull off some pro wrestling suplexes, the game looks absolutely bonkers in the best way.

Here’s everything we know about the Crimson Desert release date, gameplay details, and much more.

The Escapist recaps

  • Crimson Desert is an open-world adventure game being developed by Pearl Abyss, coming out on March 19 for PC, macOS, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X.
  • The game is set in the open world of a medieval fantasy world called Pywel, where players control Kliff, who faces rival factions, magical monsters, and more across the land.
  • Crimson Desert was originally a prequel to Black Desert Online, before being refocused into a standalone title.
  • Pearl Abyss hasn’t outright confirmed if Crimson Desert will feature a multiplayer mode in the future.

Crimson Desert Release Date

Crimson Desert is set to launch on March 19, 2026. This is almost six years after being announced at the 2020 Game Awards in December that year, via a trailer.

The game was meant to be out by the end of 2025, but an announcement in August by Pearl Abyss confirmed that they needed more time to refine Crimson Desert, hence the March 2026 release date.

Crimson Desert will be available to play on PC, macOS, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X. What’s surprising is a Mac release, but developer Pearl Abyss hasn’t confirmed if the game will be released via the Mac App Store or Steam on the platform.

For the console releases, players can choose between a standard, deluxe, or collector’s edition with various items like a steelbook and stickers. For Crimson Desert’s Collector’s Edition, an exclusive diorama of a dragon is included, as well as a pin and several notes from the developers.

Crimson Desert Gameplay

The best way to describe Crimson Desert’s gameplay is that it’s a mix of different games. This includes Assassin’s Creed, Batman: Arkham Knight, and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In an almost-60-minute trailer, gameplay can be seen of protagonist Kliff traversing the world on his horse, parrying attacks, gliding across the vast landscape, and much more.

You’ll also come across moments where you can decide to rescue or kill those in need. One example is rescuing a family from a burning building, which can reward you with items, gold, and more. In addition, the Axiom Bracelet grants players elemental abilities such as fire, ice, and lightning to use as attacks, ramping up the fun when in some tense battles.

Players can ride a dragon, pilot a mech, help villagers settle after conflicts, climb giant foes, and it even looks like there are secret dungeons to find, too.

Crimson Desert Story

Developer Pearl Abyss has been light on the story details for Crimson Desert so far. However, from what the game’s main site shows, we gather that it’s about the protagonist Kliff reclaiming land that was once his. One summary also delves further into the potential narrative of Crimson Desert:

“A devastating ambush in the deep of night by their sworn enemies, the Black Bears, leaves members of the Greymanes dead or scattered across the continent. Kliff, having lost his Greymane comrades, his family in all but name, is determined to reunite with the survivors, rebuild the fallen Greymanes, and reclaim what was lost. But on a journey where alliances are forged, dangers abound, and mysterious factions are uncovered, Kliff will come to realize that an unprecedented threat and a destiny greater than he imagined await him.”

There are clear inspirations of Assassin’s Creed and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild from this summary, which also gives the impression that Crimson Desert will take many hours to get to 100% completion.

It’s the kind of world we can see ourselves losing hundreds of hours into – and the release date isn’t far away now.
