The world isn’t lacking for dark fantasy RPGs, especially on PC, where they have flourished for decades. Throwing monsters into a foreboding dungeon is a setup that has attracted players since the early days of Dungeons & Dragons. It will remain a straightforward premise for video games for years to come.

Decrepit is the latest video game to toss players into a dark pit and tell them to climb their way out. In the case of Decrepit, it’s a castle that’s full of terrifying monsters, where the aim is to escape with one’s neck intact.
The Escapist recaps
- Decrepit is a first-person action RPG in the same vein as the King’s Field series.
- Decrepit also draws heavily on the Dark Souls franchise, with Metroidvania elements baked into its design.
- Like Dark Souls, Decrepit uses a stamina-based combat system, where the player can only perform a certain number of actions before needing to rest or run.
- Decrepit has a character class system that’s tied to the equipment the player is using, with their attributes and abilities changing, depending on their current weapons.
When could Decrepit be released?
Decrepit currently has a 2026 release window, with no set release date. Luckily, it has a gameplay trailer that shows a polished game, meaning there’s a good chance it actually launches in 2026.
Decrepit price & pre-orders
While Decrepit has a Steam page and can be wishlisted, there’s currently no pricing or pre-order information available. As it’s an indie title, it will likely be priced accordingly, likely cheaper than the $70-80 range of AAA games.
Decrepit platforms
As of the time of writing, Decrepit is currently only confirmed for PC via Steam. The fact that it has full controller support means a console port is likely, but will come after the PC release, assuming the game does well.
Decrepit trailer & gameplay analysis
The first trailer for Decrepit was revealed at The Game Awards 2025. This was a gameplay trailer that showcased some of the horrors players will encounter in the castle dungeon.
Decrepit is being developed by Jammerdal Games, a one-person studio led by Olof Hagelin. The fact that a game as polished as Decrepit is a one-man job is impressive, especially with all of the comments made about the game’s scope.
Set in a nameless castle, Decrepit stars an unnamed prisoner, who awakens in one of its cells. They find the castle crawling with monsters, including undead warriors and giant spiders. The aim is to escape the castle, which isn’t easy, as Decrepit is billed as highly challenging, especially with bosses.
Death isn’t the end in Decrepit, as upon dying, the player will awaken in a different cell from before. The idea is that Decrepit is a loose Metroidvania, with the player unlocking new routes and gradually learning the castle’s layout, allowing them to progress further each time.
There are also permanent character upgrades available, but these are hidden around the game world.
Decrepit is an entirely first-person game, with a stamina-based combat system that evokes the works of FromSoftware, especially the Dark Souls games. Like many FromSoftware games, positioning is crucial to offense and defense.
The trailer for Decrepit shows that the protagonist is ambidextrous, meaning they can use items in both hands with equal skill. This ties into Decrepit’s character class system, which is based entirely on the items they use.
The main character can equip a magic staff, a weapon, and a single armor piece, with each providing a different effect that determines how your character functions in battle. Finding a complete set of gear provides extra bonuses, but this means exploring each deadly corner of the castle.
The debut Decrepit trailer featured many enemies, many of which were undead humanoids. These include one connected to a wheel that launches itself at the enemy (which is straight out of Dark Souls), an enemy in a barrel, a bunch of bodies sewn together, a heavily armored knight, and a Lich-like spellcaster.
The magic spells shown in the trailer are elemental in nature, with lots of fire and ice attacks. The staff can seemingly replicate weapons, creating blades made of energy that are used to strike foes like melee weapons. There doesn’t appear to be any standard ranged weapons (bows, crossbows, spears), as magic seems to be the main ranged option.
Decrepit prides itself on its difficulty, both in and out of combat. The developers have confirmed that Decrepit lacks any kind of map or quest markers, meaning it’s time to whip out the pencil and graph paper.
This might be a deal breaker for some, especially as it was one of the biggest complaints with Clair Obscur, but bear in mind that there will be fan-made maps made within hours of the game coming out, so it’s not as if players will be completely alone.
Ask The Escapist
There’s currently no word on console ports for Decrepit. If the game is a hit on PC, then it will almost certainly receive a console port in the future. The game’s performance is low enough that it could probably run on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One, should the developers wish to put it on those platforms.
Anyone can request access to the Decrepit playtest via the game’s official Steam page.
Decrepit is currently billed as a single-player game. This means no calling other people for help if you’re trapped on a particularly hard boss.
Yes, Decrepit supports both controller and mouse-and-keyboard playstyles.
