- Ask The Escapist
The 2026 video game schedule has been looking empty, especially in the second half, with companies previously terrified to announce anything near Grand Theft Auto 6. Now that The Game Awards 2025 is over, next year’s gaming calendar is a lot more fleshed out, and it looks like Rockstar won’t be carrying 2026 on its own.
The Escapist recaps
- The Game Awards 2025 was broadcast on December 11, 2025.
- Clair Obsur: Expedition 33 swept the awards, but pretty much all the big titles won at least one award.
- The exception to this was Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which was the biggest snub of the event.
- While many of the most significant announcements leaked beforehand, there were still a few surprises to be had.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic
Arguably, the biggest announcement of The Game Awards 2025 was for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a new game in the beloved RPG franchise. More importantly, Casey Hudson, the director of the original game and the Mass Effect trilogy, is back at the game. Little was revealed about the game, and we still don’t know its platforms or release schedule, but this is definitely one to keep an eye on.
Divinity is Larian Studios’ next game
Now that Baldur’s Gate 3 is out, Larian Studios is free to work on something not related to Dungeons & Dragons. The company has chosen to return to the Divinity franchise, with what was easily the most R-rated trailer of the show. The Divinity trailer showed an incredibly graphic execution in the vein of The Wicker Man, suggesting the final product is going to be as adult as Baldur’s Gate 3.
Resident Evil Requiem has Leon in it
In a reveal that was leaked many times before the official announcement, Leon is a playable character in Resident Evil Requiem. He might be in his fifties, but he’s still kicking ass as well as he did in his twenties. The trailer also revealed more about the story, showing a former Umbrella scientist pursuing Grace over something called “Elpis.” Leon also gets to use a chainsaw, which is rad.
The Free Shepard stars a good boy
Easily the cutest trailer at The Game Awards 2025 was for The Free Shepard, a game where you play as a sheep-herding dog, while some magical stuff happens in the background. Expect this to be a popular one with the streamers.
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is all about the Eldritch Blasts
While there was no Baldur’s Gate 4 at the show, there was a strong Dungeons & Dragons presence, thanks to a brand-new title. Warlock: Dungeons & Dungeons is an upcoming single-player action-adventure game, starring Tricia Helfer as Kaatri, a Warlock who has made a pact with a higher power in exchange for magic. Hopefully, she’ll have more spell slots than an actual Dungeons & Dragons Warlock.
Decrepit was revealed to the world
The age of first-person dungeon crawlers isn’t over yet, as Decrepit proved with its creepy trailer at The Game Awards 2025. Launching in 2026, Decrepit had some of the best monster designs at The Game Awards, which will be even more terrifying to face in the flesh.
Pragmata’s release date & PC demo
Capcom revealed a new gameplay trailer with a release date for Pragmata, the bizarre sci-fi game where you take care of a young girl. Pragmata will launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on April 26, 2025. There’s a demo available now on PC, with console ones arriving later.
Bradley the Badger
One of the low-key most interesting trailers at The Game Awards 2025 was for Bradley the Badger. This upcoming platformer seems to be turning the “exploring an incomplete video game” creepypasta format into comedy, with some genuinely interesting game-creation mechanics thrown into the exploration.
Stupid Never Dies isn’t a new Lollipop Chainsaw game (but it could be)
Stupid Never Dies can best be described as a “Suda51 game after he’d just finished watching Chainsaw Man”, with its teenage cast doing funky monster stuff in a rave-colored world. Stupid Never Dies is an action game that’s all about stealing the powers of enemies, and it easily wins the award for “best trailer song” at The Game Awards, as it’s a bop.
Exodus is coming in 2027
Wizards of the Coast might be best known for Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, but it’s dipping its toes into the sci-fi world, via a new game called Exodus, which bears a striking resemblance to Mass Effect. Exodus stars Jun, a human with extraordinary abilities, who must form a ragtag group of allies to save the universe. So far, so Guardians of the Galaxy, and fans will be waiting a while to experience it, as Exodus won’t arrive until 2027.
Gang of Dragon sure does look familiar
Man, Kiryu really let himself go. Oh no, wait, this isn’t a new Yakuza game, it’s just something by the same creator. This is Gang of Dragon, a legally distinct entity from the Like a Dragon series. In Gang of Dragon, you play as Shin Ji-Seong, a member of a Korean crime syndicate who beats people up and steals stuff.
Street Fighter movie premiere looks like an SNL sketch
The Game Awards 2025 featured a sneak peek at the 2026 Street Fighter. Not going to lie, it looks pretty rough. There are times when you need to tone a design down to make it look good on the screen, and this is one of them. Everything looks really goofy, like a bunch of cosplayers making a fan movie. Still, even if it’s bad, it would still only be the third-worst Street Fighter film.
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight release date reveal
The bat is returning in block form, as Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight got a release date trailer at The Game Awards 2025. This game draws heavily on the Nolan films and the Rocksteady Arkham games, but with a Lego comedy flair. Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on May 29, 2026.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a remake of the first game for the 30th anniversary
Lara Croft had a massive presence at The Game Awards 2025, with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis being a complete remake of the original game in Unreal Engine 5. The game is almost unrecognizable, though that’s to be expected, considering the original is nearly thirty years old at this point. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026.
Tomb Raider: Catalyst is Lara’s newest adventure
Not only is the original Tomb Raider getting a remake, but a whole new entry is on the way. Tomb Raider: Catalyst marks a return for Lara Croft, with more platforming and shooting everything that moves on the cards. Tomb Raider: Catalyst is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2027.
Lords of the Fallen 2 gameplay trailer reveal
2026 might not have any single-player FromSoftware games on the schedule, but Lords of the Fallen 2 could fill that hole. Lords of the Fallen 2 is an upcoming dark fantasy action RPG Soulslike set across different realms, where tons of nasty boss monsters wait to destroy the player. The Game Awards 2025 featured the first gameplay trailer for Lords of the Fallen 2, though it still only has a 2026 release window on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The 2.5 version of Lords of the Fallen was also announced, which adds new equipment and more challenging boss fights.
Lenny Kravitz is fighting James Bond in 007 First Light
A new trailer for 007 First Light was shown. Turns out, this James Bond prequel isn’t rehashing Blofeld or Jaws. Instead, the villain is a new foe, named Bawma, played by musician Lenny Kravitz, who showed up at The Game Awards dressed like his character. 007 First Light is coming to PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on March 26, 2025.
Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred expansion is on the way
The story of Diablo 4 is continuing next year. A trailer for Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred was shown at The Game Awards 2025, with a launch date of April 26, 2026. Those who purchase the expansion now will be able to access the Paladin class in Diablo 4 Season 11, bringing back the classic job from Diablo 2 into the modern game.
Saros has a new trailer (alongside a delay announcement)
Housemarque’s upcoming Saros had a new gameplay trailer at The Game Awards, showcasing more of the monsters players will face. The only sad part was that the game will be delayed, but it’s only a short one, as Saros is now coming to PS5 on April 30, 2026.
No Law had one of the best trailers at The Game Awards 2025
No Law is a brand-new stealth/action game that debuted its trailer at The Game Awards 2025, and it was one of the most impressive-looking titles at the show. No Law looks like a mix between Cyberpunk 2077 and the recently canceled Perfect Dark reboot, with the player cutting a path of carnage through a city overrun by criminals. No Law lacks a release date, but it can be wishlisted now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Total War: Warhammer 40:000 is going intergalactic
The next Total War has been revealed, and it’s going to be on a scale never seen before in the franchise. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is set in the universe of the popular tabletop game, where humanity is under threat by intergalactic xeno empires and the ever-encroaching corruption of the Chaos Gods. The first trailer looked incredible, with Space Marines fighting Orks across multiple planets at once, in an experience that promises to devour what little social life remains of the tabletop game’s fanbase.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve
The Ace Combat series has been due for a return for a while now, with Bandai Namco hinting at a new title for the series’ 30th anniversary. The franchise is officially returning, as Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve had its first gameplay trailer at The Game Awards, with a ton of story and character content alongside it. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026.
Star Wars Galactic Racer is going to teach us about Pod Racing
The Game Awards 2025 was a big event for Star Wars fans, as it also featured the debut trailer for Star Wars Galactic Racer, a new racing game that looks like it’s about Pod Racing, but seems to be distancing itself from Episode 1. Star Wars Galactic Racer is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026.
Phasmophobia is coming to Nintendo Switch 2
After a five-year wait, it was revealed at The Game Awards 2025 that the multiplayer horror sensation Phasmophobia is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026. Unfortunately, it’s lacking a solid release date outside of the year, so a delay could well be on the cards.
Out of Words looks like the next big co-op game
It wouldn’t be The Game Awards without a cute and slightly disturbing co-op platformer. In 2025, this role was taken by Out of Words, a game in which two players take on the roles of two people without mouths who go on adventures in a strange, stop-motion world. Out of Words is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026.
Phantom Blade 0 had an incredible new trailer
Phantom Blade 0 has appeared at a few industry showcases now, but its latest trailer at The Game Awards 2025 might be its best yet, revealing all kinds of unique boss encounters, including a drunken master, a gang of monks, and a guy fighting a giant dragon mask. Fans will have to wait a little longer to play it, as Phantom Blade 0 is coming to PC and PS5 on September 9, 2026.
Mega Man Dual Override is bringing the Blue Bomber back
One of the big surprises of The Game Awards 2025 was Mega Man Dual Override, a new game in the original Mega Man timeline. Like the old NES games, it’s a 2D run-and-gun platformer, with many of the iconic enemies recreated in gorgeous HD visuals. Apparently, it takes a long time to make a 2D Mega Man game, as Mega Man Dual Override is coming to Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox in 2027.
A new Super Mario Galaxy movie trailer
Street Fighter wasn’t the only movie trailer shown at The Game Awards 2025, as Super Mario Galaxy also received one. In the new Super Mario Galaxy trailer, Bowser Junior is shown trying to free his father from imprisonment, using that magic brush from Super Mario Sunshine as a power-up. Super Mario Galaxy is coming to theaters in April 2026.
A new Control game is on the way
Control: Resonant had its debut trailer at The Game Awards 2025, continuing the story of the bizarre sci-fi universe. Only this time, Control: Resonant is eschewing the gunplay of its predecessor and going for a melee combat approach, being more akin to Devil May Cry, as the protagonist slashes his way through strange monsters. Control: Resonant is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026.
Highguard closed out The Game Awards
The Game Awards 2025 ended with something that’s coming out soon, with a game developed by industry veterans who worked on Titanfall and Apex Legends. The big closer game was Highguard, a free-to-play fantasy/sci-fi hero shooter with horseback riding and fancy vehicles. Most importantly, the game is coming soon: Highguard launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on January 26, 2026.
Ask The Escapist
Nope. Geoff couldn’t land the biggest title of 2026.
Nope, not even with The Duskbloods. This suggests the company’s next big title after Elden Ring is still a long way from release.
It’s difficult to say, because so much got leaked beforehand. It’s a toss-up between Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic and Divinity.
This is like when Ross and Rachel broke up.
