What do you do when you’ve released a revolutionary animated series that will define Western animation for years to come like Batman: The Animated Series? You bring in the bigger guns and make one almost as good and yet totally different. That’s what WB did when it released Superman: The Animated Series in 1996, and now as part of the show’s 25th anniversary, the studio is releasing a new Blu-ray box set of the entire series remastered.
The box set includes all 54 episodes completely remastered from the 35 mm, so you can admire the vibrant animation style, a sharp contrast to Batman’s, in all its glory. The sound of Superman: The Animated Series has been remastered as well, so you can hear Tim Daly as Clark Kent / Superman in glorious sound. He and Dana Delany as Lois Lane, David Kaufman as Jimmy Olsen, and Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor were the voice of these characters for a generation.
WB went deep on these remasterings, giving special attention to extensive color correction, dirt and scratch clean up, and adding a grain reduction pass to create a pristine picture, all while making sure not to affect the original lines in the artwork of the animation. They will all be presented in the original 4×3 aspect ratio, which one would think should be a given but we all remember what happened with The Simpsons.
The six-disc box will be crammed full of stuff, totaling 21 hours. If it’s anything like the box set Batman: The Animated Series got, this should be some really great stuff to watch. While Superman: The Animated Series never quite reached the heights of its sister series, it offered a fantastic take on the last son of Krypton and truly launched WB’s animation dominance.
