Le Chevalier D’Eon Volume 2

Hawkeye

If you haven’t seen the review of Volume 1 click here! It’ll give you a better idea of what’s going on and who’s who.

Dark plots and twisted conspiracies run deep in the veins of the nobility of both France and Russia. D’Eon and his companions travel into foreign lands to seek audience with the Czarina in hopes that a friendship seeded long ago by his sister will gain them a strong ally against the corruption and black magic of an evil secret society. This rag tag group of secret agents for the king must follow D’Eons sister’s footsteps, but instead of more answers to how she died, they only find more questions.

imageThe road is even more dangerous and complicated for our heroes D’Eon, Durand, Robin and Teillagory in this second volume of Le Chevalier D’Eon. The group enters Russia on a secret mission to meet with the queen there, but their path is riddled with enemies. Word has leaked out that they are in enemy territory and their journey becomes a mad dash to stay ahead of their enemies and to stay alive. If that wasn’t enough of a problem, D’Eons sister’s spirit is becoming stronger merging even more with D’Eons body. Finally, their path ends them at the queen of Russia’s palace, where they must attend a masquerade in order to speak with the queen herself. But this isn’t any normal ball, here the men must dress as women and the women as men. How will people react when D’Eon poses as his sister tricking people into thinking the dead is living once more?

The story is intricate and enchanting, and at the same time disturbing. They blend the plots and conspiracies together perfectly, keeping the viewer on edge with occult scenes, and then enchanted with the politics and in depth relatable characters. This show truly is the perfect example of executing a brilliant story.

imageThe art work as in the previous volume is stunning. CG backgrounds are combined with a cast of expertly drawn and animated characters and even blended with regular 2D backgrounds. It’s cutting edge and the next level of animation that other animes are going to need to achieve or fall behind. It’s one of the most visually rich series I’ve seen done in a long time.

Voice acting and music were the same as the previous volume as well. They were expertly done and it dramatically contributed to the over all feel of the show. They didn’t spare any expense when putting together the extras on this disc, either. They included conversations with knights, several different types of commentary, promo events, historical notes and more! There’s enough in extras to make even the most anal reviewer satisfied.

This show is what anime is all about. It takes an extraordinary story and combines it with stunning artwork and beautiful sound. It’s serious, it’s funny, its enchanting and intricate, I don’t think I could ask for more in a single show. Le Chevalier D’Eon truly is the entire package.
