ModNation Racers Dev Creates LittleBigPlanet Karting

Sony has hired the developer behind ModNation Racers (a game many would call Mario Kart meets LittleBigPlanet) to develop LittleBigPlanet Karting (a game many would call Mario Kart meets LittleBigPlanet).

After a few leaked images exposed the game’s existence last month, Sony has decided to officially announce LittleBigPlanet Karting, a game it describes as a “new LittleBigPlanet collaboration” between Media Molecule, the guys behind LBP, and United Front, the team behind last year’s ModNation Racers. The game will be released at some point this year and will, somewhat unsurprisingly, be exclusive to PlayStation 3.

Karting will center around LBP’s famed creation system, allowing players to customize everything from their own stylin’ Sackboy racer to his tricked-out cardboard kart and share them with strangers, friends, and strange friends via PSN. Players will also be able to make their own tracks, as well as alter the rules and parameters of different courses.

LBP Karting is set in an entirely 3D world allowing players to create rich and varied gameplay experiences,” United Front Games wrote on the PlayStation Blog. “Tons of familiar LBP gadgets will be present, along with a brand new toolbox specifically tailored to allow for building in LBP Karting’s 3D world. Along with fan favourite racing and battle modes, players will be able to modify the rules of the game itself to create completely new modes and challenges. All of this is wrapped up in a community experience that should have LBP fans feeling right at home.”

If you’re an uncreative lump (or simply don’t want to spend six hours carefully constructing the Mona Lisa of raceways only have some twelve-year-old in Switzerland you’ll never meet play it for two minutes before getting bored) there’s a ton of official content, too. Aside from regular races, players will be able to compete in the game’s Battle modes, objective-based missions, and minigames. All of this can be done online via PSN or, for that old-school Kart feeling, in local four-player splitscreen.

“We are very eager to see what you think of this union and especially excited to see what happens now that you have a 3D environment to create in!” wrote Media Molecule of the game’s imminent release. “It’s the start of a whole new LBP world!”
