Blizzard reveals info on some of Diablo 4’s Warlock skill tree and playstyles

Blizzard revealed more details on the Warlock class ahead of Diablo IV’s Lord of Hatred expansion release. The post goes into detail, showcasing four distinct Soul Shard archetypes that offer Warlocks a distinct style of evil wizardry. In addition, other marketing materials also revealed some brief looks into the Warlock Skill Tree, giving you an idea of how you can play around those archetypes.

In general, the Warlock aims to balance out two keywords: Wrath for skills and Dominance for summoning demons. Unlike traditional pet classes, Warlocks have a mechanic that makes their summoning different to Necromancers, and that’s by having to dominate demons against their will, while the dead are mindless servants, giving both classes a distinction in their pet playstyles.

Blizzard teases the Warlock Skill Tree and playstyles

At Level 30, Warlocks unlock their Class Mechanic by selecting one of four Soul Shards, each binding a specific Greater Demon and granting transformative passive abilities:

  • Legion – Summon legions to overwhelm your foes, exploiting deaths to fuel the onslaught
  • Vanguard – Ride into battle on a hellhound, transforming into a demon and spreading fire as the spearhead of your arsenal
  • Mastermind – Binds foes and demons to your will, using terror and shadows to dominate
  • Ritualist – Empower hellfire and rituals to explode enemies

In general, it feels like Legion is a more classic pet theme, swarming enemies with demons. Vanguard feels more like a fire knight-type build. Ritualist comes across as a melee caster using traps, hexes, and other forms of spells to cleave or delete bosses. Mastermind seems like a classical DoT curse theme class, more akin to Affliction Warlocks and Shadow Priests from WoW, using control, mobility, and range to damage foes.

We also have an idea of what to expect from the Skill Tree, based on what is visible in the IGN hands-on video.

It should give you an idea of what the skill tree looks like, with the flow of the tree showing how the abilities alter those archetypes of Warlock. Other, more vague skills on the skill tree come from the teasers Blizzard shared on the official Warlock deep dive blog.

It’s quite a significant update, considering we have not heard much of the Diablo 4 Warlock since it was revealed at the big Diablo 4 anniversary presentation. The news also comes alongside players hearing of Doom crossover, butcher mechanic for the net D4 season, and a Paladin Free trial since that class is already live with pre-orders of the next D4 expansion
