Rockstar Games adds “Charlie Kirk” to list of profanities after assassination mission appears in GTA Online

Rockstar Games has added “Charlie Kirk” to the Grand Theft Auto Online profanity filter after someone created the “We are Charlie Kirk” mission.

The mission appears quite simple: snipe someone located at a school. Right after the person dies, the screen states: Mission Passed. It’s a clear reference to right-wing podcaster Charlie Kirk’s assassination, which happened while he was debating the necessary evil of school shootings on a college campus.

“We are Charlie Kirk” continues to be internet meme

Charlie Kirk’s death has been controversial across the internet, with both sides of the political spectrum having strong, heated emotions about the situation. The side that felt Kirk’s rhetoric was dangerous created a satirical song titled “We are Charlie Kirk,” which was meant to mock the conservative side’s sensitivity over his murder.

The sensitivity surrounding Kirk has led to considerable drama in the gaming industry as well. Sucker Punch fired an employee working on Ghost of Yotei for making comments about Kirk on social media, sparking controversy across the gaming world. The accused killer, groyper Tyler Robinson, was big into gaming and Reddit, which caused politicians to do the whole “video games cause violence” thing they do when they don’t understand internet culture or want to avoid the real motivations of a murder.

With the Kirk killings so intertwined with the internet and gaming culture, it’s no surprise to see a ton of memes on TikTok mocking his death and references to the murder in video games. However, the realism of GTA Online has most definitely left a bad taste in many people’s mouths. While some found it funny, many found it offensive and maybe even a bit grotesque.

The “We are Charlie Kirk” mission was still active at the time of publishing, but a data miner has found that “charliekirk” was added to the profanity filter on January 12th, following the creation of the mission. Rockstar Games has not commented on the situation.
