sonic mario olympic games tokyo

The Mario and Sonic rivalry has always been sorta stupid, and we just learned of even more foolishness with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

Mario and Sonic basically have no choice but to be rivals, and the two iconic video game mascots have often clashed over the years (often some marketed beef, sorta like 2000s hip-hop artists had).

Recently, SEGA producer Ryoichi Hasegawa revealed a pretty petty scenario that happened while creating Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games that came out of that long-time rivalry.

Sonic and Mario weren’t so chummy in Olympic Games

In an interview with Attack Retro Gaming Network, Hasegawa shared some pretty entertaining (and salty) insight into the marketing and artwork behind Sonic & Mario at the Olympic Games.

While Nintendo and SEGA were willing to put aside their quasi-rivalry to create the goofy Wii game, Nintendo apparently had some particular demands. Apparently, SEGA was forced to change some early artwork to ensure Mario’s foot was in front of Sonic’s.

The official art was meant to have Mario’s foot ahead of Sonic’s. Strange, because Sonic is definitely faster if you care about canon. This artwork was meant to be on the cover, instruction manual, cartridge label, and other marketing stuff.

“There was one small error and Sonic’s foot was in front of Mario’s food, and Nintendo demanded us to change the priority,” Hasegawa said in the interview. “I still remember that. We were like, ‘Oh my god. We have to change it or there will be no deal.”

It’s a pretty hilarious footnote (ha!) about the classic Wii game. I had a lot of fun with the original and have always appreciated the series. It’s the perfect party game if you don’t have the coordination for Just Dance. However, it seems that the series has ended, so it’s safe to say that Sonic is faster than Mario again.
