Metro 2039 writer hints the story will be dark, gown up, and relevant to everyone

With the Metro 2039 First Look stream happening today, lead author Dmitry Glukhovsky has been active in its build-up. The writer has been posting on social media about the game’s story, and it’s something he’s been meaning to tell for a while. The author is the original author of the Metro 2033 books, and this new story promises to be very dark, grown-up, and extremely relevant.

Glukhovsky teases dark themes for Metro 2039

The descriptions of the story came over the last few days, made across several tweets on X.

The first message arrived on April 14th, the day after Xbox and Metro revealed they were working together on a showcase. There was a message posted the day after, but it is less detailed than the post made the morning before the stream. That was made on April 15th, which has been posted on Reddit. Some seem to think it’s culture war stuff.

Given that Metro as a series has been about nuclear war, dystopia, and strong-arm leaders, it’s likely Metro 2039 is intertwined with the Russo-Ukraine war. Since Dmitry mentions the darkness of war and the “highly relevant to everyone” part, this makes sense. Especially given the current world tensions with Israel (Dmitry’s other homeland), the USA, Iran, and other minor conflicts across the globe, there’s certainly more parallels. Now those are affecting everyone, thanks to the fuel crisis coming from it. Another hint perchance?

We did get some leaks about the storyline thanks to some big story synopses posted earlier online. I won’t spoil it, but there are a few parallels in the story that reflect the motifs of what Dmitry is implying online.

Also, given that the author is a novel writer, you may want to check up on the different Metro books to see where the plot could be going. We know it’s going back to the actual metros now, not just the Exodus open-world maps, so it seems there’s more continuity with the series’ lore now.

Only time will tell what will be shown, with the stream on at 6pm BST on the Xbox YouTube First Look for Metro 2039 channel later today.
