Realism! Your companions in The Outer Worlds 2 can kill you

In an attempt to make The Outer Worlds 2 feel realistic and immersive, developers have revealed that the companions you take along with you can decide to kill you if they disagree with you. Outer Worlds takes place in America, confirmed???

While speaking with Xbox Expansion Pass, Obsidian developers Matt Singh and Brandon Adler discussed how companions think and behave in The Outer Worlds 2. It was really important to the team to make these characters really feel like individuals with their own free will.

“One of the things that was really important is we wanted these characters to feel like they’re their own people,” said Singh. “They have their own goals, their own motivations, and if the player’s aligning with them, that’s great. They’re going to be there for you. They’ll fight alongside you.”

However, if you aren’t doing stuff that the companion likes, they may decide to leave you. Or fight you untl the death.

Outer Worlds 2 companions have free will (to kill you)

To make it even more realistic, companions you have a strong relationship with will “be there for you in the end” even after attempting to kill you. So if you have PTSD from a toxic ex, The Outer Worlds 2 could be therapuetic or traumatizing, depending how you deal with things.

Unlike your ex, however, the companions in The Outer Worlds 2 will warn you before turning on you.

Explained Adler: “There’s some pretty serious points in the story where things can happen and go south where they may say something even as simple as, ‘You’re going to take me along on this thing,’ and depending on how you’ve treated them or how you continue to treat them, that could have big implications.”

At these points in the game, companions will let you know when they’ve reached their breaking point. You can choose what to do with that information.

Man, maybe we’re the toxic ones…

This is all part of Obsidian’s plan to make The Outer Worlds 2 feel more realistic and in-depth than the first game. While I enjoyed the first Outer Worlds, possibly because I missed Fallout, a lot of people did feel like it didn’t have as many choices, paths, and engaging interactions as it should. This should change in The Outer Worlds 2.

With companions reacting to what’s going on around them – including your own decisions – it’s sure to feel a lot more personal and immersive this time.

The Outer Worlds 2 launches October 29 for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. At that time, you can find out if you you were the toxic companion all along.
