Pokemon Legends Z-A

We feel sorry for the millions of people that played Pokemon Legends Z-A on Switch 1

The Switch 2 has been here for a few months now, and by and large, it’s been received pretty well. It’s seemingly selling well in hardware charts, and it’s been supported by a bunch of exclusives, most recently with Pokemon Legends Z-A.

And, as it turns out, that game has sold pretty well too, shifting 5.8 million copies in its first week when taking physical and digital together, marking it as the fifth highest selling game in the franchise. Perhaps most interesting, though, is that The Pokemon Company says (thanks, VGC) that sales were split around 50/50 between Switch 1 and Switch 2.

That means an awful lot of people are playing Pokemon Legends Z-A on Switch 1, which may not be the best way to play.

Aside from running at 30 FPS on the 2017 system, there are low-resolution textures, more pop-in, and some chunks of detail that take a while to load in. For more, check out SwitchUp’s coverage below.

That’s a shame, because Pokemon releases remain tentpole attractions in any given year, but thankfully the game is more performative on Switch 2, but not quite as impressive as other games we’ve seen this year.

All of this is to say, we’re not here to yuck anyone’s yum – if you’re playing on Switch 1 and having a great time, more power to you. But it does feel like we’re fast approaching the time for Nintendo to push harder on Switch 2.

How will Metroid Prime 4: Beyond fare in December? We’ll soon find out.
