Valheim confirms 1.0 release date alongside new Deep North biome

Iron Gate and Coffee Stain Publishing have confirmed Valheim’s release date, with it leaving Early Access on September 9th, 2026. Announced during the PC Gaming Show, the 1.0 release marks the end of a development journey that began when the game first entered Early Access in 2021, and brings with it Valheim’s final biome, the Deep North.

The full release will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Linux, and Mac, with full crossplay between all platforms at launch.

What is coming with Valheim’s 1.0 release date

The Deep North is Valheim’s final biome and the centrepiece of the 1.0 update. We got a brief chance to play it, and it appears to generate in the very far northern fringes of the world.

It is a frozen landscape that deceives players on arrival, initially presenting as a quiet, postcard-like expanse of snowy mesas and icy fields before revealing itself to be one of the most hostile environments in the game. Players exploring the Deep North will discover abandoned Viking settlements, quickly making clear that others tried and failed to survive here before them.

The biome introduces new enemies tied to that history. Gammeltrolls are ancient trolls that migrated to the Deep North as they aged, transforming into primordial giants that now serve as the guardians of the region. Underground, new threats and dungeons await too. The Elakingar are malicious creatures that have burrowed deep into the earth, having previously defeated Vikings who attempted to settle the land.

The new biome also comes with new art and environmental details, including ice textures and frozen lakes that can be used as building surfaces for your bases. There is also a nice little ice skating mechanic. The update adds a Grappling Hook for traversal, alongside new armour sets based on the Aesir and other Norse references.

As for the rest of the game, there are revamped biome differences planned for early game players, and killing bosses now comes with new story cinematics and other features designed to help tie all of the game’s updates over the years together into a more cohesive whole.
