In December 2024, Capcom revealed that Okami 2, otherwise known as Okami Sequel, is being developed. Okami Sequel news has been a long time coming, with the original title now over 19 years old. Despite time marching on, love for Okami persists, as does the hope that, one day, a sequel will capture the energy and majesty of the first game.

Even though the sequel has been teased, Okami Sequel has many development stages to go before any further updates are given. While it will be “some time” before we see another glimpse of this stunning world, we can take a closer look at the Okami Sequel project details and what we know this early in the game.

The Escapist recaps

  • Okami Sequel was revealed in the form of a short teaser trailer at The Game Awards 2024.
  • No Okami 2 release date has been revealed yet, for the game is still very early in development.
  • Capcom has confirmed that Okami 2 is a direct sequel to the first title and will continue the adventure we played through all of those years ago.
  • Whether Okami Sequel will reference Okamiden, the 2010 sequel to Okami, is difficult to ascertain. Given how unfavourable many reviews were at the time, Capcom may choose to omit its existence altogether.

When could Okami Sequel be released?

There’s no Okami 2 release date yet, largely because its development is still in its infancy. Although Capcom has an Okami Sequel page, the information provided is confined to the teaser and news that the original game’s director, Hideki Kamiya, will be in charge of the project.

Capcom said, “It will be some time before we greet you again, but we really hope you look forward to this project.” This means we can expect a significant amount of radio silence between now and even a hint of a possible release date.

Okami Sequel has no price; its price point is speculative only. And even then, such estimations are tentative. Depending on when Okami 2 is released, the cost of video games is likely to increase further.

As gamers are well aware, the current price of new titles ranges from $60 to $70. Obviously, this total is dependent on numerous factors, but on average, this is the cost.

Accordingly, if Okami Sequel launches in the next few years, its price will likely fall within that price bracket. However, considering the duration of development, the final fee could exceed $70. Okami HD still retails at $19.99, which goes to show how popular and highly valued the OG title is.

Okami Sequel platforms

Okami 2’s platform availability is speculative only; however, many assume the sequel will launch on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and the Nintendo Switch 2.

The assumption is that it’ll be current-gen consoles preparing for Okami Sequel’s release, yet, due to long development times, we could see it released on next-gen consoles instead. If the rumors about PS6’s launch ring true, then it could be that Okami 2 is an ideal title to showcase the platform’s capabilities.

Okami Sequel trailer & gameplay analysis

The Okami Sequel trailer is enigmatic, to say the least. Its job was to merely tease the new installment; it’s a job it does well. Still, as for alluding to any potential narrative or gameplay, it offers fans very little.

We open on an emerging monochrome vista, with the familiar Sumi-e ink art style from the first title seeping through. In a shadowy and dense forest, a creature runs by; it’s their journey we follow in this brief one-minute and eight-second-long trailer. Initially, we can only speculate as to whether this is Amaterasu’s fox form; however, once we break free of the forest, an explosion of color reveals Okami’s familiar white fox.

Although the developers attempted to add an air of mystery by teasing the identity of this so-called unknown character, it was soon revealed that the fox is the Japanese goddess from the OG game. Considering how this fox is reinvigorating their surroundings, and that Okami Sequel is a direct sequel to Okami, it makes sense that we continue the tale with Amaterasu as the main protagonist.

Okami Sequel’s trailer finishes with Amaterasu racing towards the sunrise over the mountains, an image steeped in symbolism of the dawning of a new age for the franchise. And while we see the brush stroke of Sumi-e transform a flower from bud to bloom, no other hints as to the sequel’s gameplay are shared.

Ask The Escapist

Who is developing Okami Sequel?

Okami 2 is being co-developed by Clover Inc., M-TWO Inc., and Machine Head Works. Moreover, Hideki Kamiya, the director of the first game, has assumed his role to oversee the project.

Will Okami 2 use RE Engine?

Okami Sequel is being developed in RE Engine, as per IGN. According to the details shared, this is to allow for elements omitted from the first title – due to insufficient technology at the time – now being available within RE Engine.

When is Okami Sequel coming out?

Sadly, Okami Sequel has no release date in sight; it’s in the very early stages of development, meaning it’s years away from release.

Will Okami Sequel reference Okamiden?

Okamiden, while previously referred to as Okami’s sequel, is better described as a spiritual successor rather than a true sequel. Consequently, it’s likely the title won’t be referenced in Okami 2. Many fans have treated the game as non-canon due to Kamiya’s lack of involvement in the 2010 release, so this shouldn’t impact lore too much.
