Pokémon Mega Dimension is adding a mechanic that won’t work in the mainline games

The Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A is adding a brand new form of Mega Evolution to the series, and while its mechanics perfectly match the new combat system introduced in the spin-off, it’s going to struggle to work correctly in other forms of Pokémon media.

The new mechanic, called Z Mega Evolution, was introduced in the Mega Lucario Z trailer. Z Mega Evolutions have a time-based function, where the Pokémon responds to the player’s command quicker than before. The downside is that the meter drains faster, meaning the Pokémon can’t maintain the Z Mega Evolution form for long.

The Escapist recaps

  • Mega Dimension is the upcoming DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A and is set to launch on December 10, 2025.
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A brought back the Mega Evolution mechanic, which was last seen in the Gen 7 games.
  • Mega Dimension is adding a new form of Mega Evolution, called Z Mega Evolution.
  • Z Mega Evolutions obey commands faster than regular Mega Evolution Pokémon, but they don’t stay on the field as long.

How Z Mega Evolutions can work in the mainline Pokémon games

As the mainline Pokémon games use turn-based battle systems, the idea of a timer for moves doesn’t really work. When it comes to Mega Evolution, the player needs to activate it during their turn, and it lasts for the rest of the battle, or until that Pokémon is KO’d.

There are two ways Z Mega Evolutions could reflect their limited power. The first involves treating them like Dynamax Pokémon, where they only stay on the field for a few turns before returning to their original form.

The second is to treat them like Primal Reversion, with Z Mega Evolutions entering the battle already transformed, granting them access to their Ability straight away.

The faster command speed of the Z Mega Evolutions would likely be reflected by that Pokémon receiving a massive Speed stat boost when they evolve. The other way to do it is to give them moves with a higher priority, or an Ability that boosts their move priority.

How Z Mega Evolutions can work in Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go probably has the easiest time reflecting Z Mega Evolutions, due to having an active battle system. Z Mega Evolutions could simply have swifter charge times for attacks, while only being active in battle for a finite period of time.

To encourage their use, the developers could allow players to have a Z Mega Evolution Pokémon transformed alongside their regular Mega Evolution or Primal Reversion, with the limitation that a team may have only one of each Mega Evolution form.

Pokémon Go is more likely to have Z Mega Evolutions than the other games in the franchise, as that’s the aspect of Pokémon where they have continued to be relevant. Niantic also needs as much content as it can get, so Z Mega Evolutions should be making their way into the mobile game eventually.

How Z Mega Evolutions can work in the Pokémon Trading Card Game

The Pokémon Trading Card Game will have an easy time adapting Z Mega Evolutions, because it probably won’t. More than likely, Z Mega Evolutions will just be treated like the regular Mega Evolutions

In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Mega Evolutions have appeared in different forms. They’ve either been evolutions for EX Pokémon or acted as a standard Stage 1 or 2 evolution. In their appearances, Mega Evolutions are powerful cards, but they award more Prize Cards when defeated, which adds a risk factor to their use.

It’s unclear how many Z Mega Evolutions will be created for Mega Evolution, but it likely won’t be enough to form the centerpiece of a Pokémon Trading Card Game set. Instead, likely, cards like Mega Lucario Z will just be treated like standard Mega Evolution cards, except with different moves and stats from the other Mega Evolutions.

Treating Z Mega Evolutions like standard Mega Evolutions in the Pokémon Trading Card Game might be a boring answer, but it’s the only one that makes sense. The idea of faster attacks doesn’t exactly translate to the Pokémon Trading Card Game. While it’s possible to have a card “de-evolve” after a few turns, it would make Z Mega Evolutions far worse than the standard ones, unless it happened to heal the Pokémon in the process, which would make it too strong.

Ask The Escapist

Will Mega Evolutions ever return to the mainline Pokémon games?

That’s a tough one, as Pokémon Champions seems to be the graveyard for abandoned battle mechanics. However, it will definitely return in remakes of Pokémon X & Y and Pokémon Sun & Moon, even if it’s never featured in a new game ever again.

Will Z Mega Evolutions appear in the Pokémon anime?

The Pokémon anime will almost certainly feature Z Mega Evolutions, especially with Lucario being such a popular Pokémon. It’s just a shame that the movies have stopped, as they would have been the perfect place to showcase them. If Z Mega Evolutions had been around during Ash Ketchum’s era, then he likely would have used Mega Lucario Z on his final team.

Will Pokémon Unite feature Z Mega Evolutions?

Mega Evolutions already appear in Pokémon Unite as a power-up, so Z Mega Evolutions feel like a natural fit there. Z Mega Evolutions could just provide a speed boost at the cost of a limited-time transformation.

Will The Pokémon Company just forget Z Mega Evolutions and never use them again after Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

The mainline video games might not return to Mega Evolutions for a long time, but Pokémon Go and the Pokémon Trading Card Game could easily slot in Z Mega Evolutions, even if it were just for new content.
