How to get Large Milk in Stardew Valley: Friendship, mood, and exact mechanics

Large Milk is one of the most valuable early dairy upgrades in Stardew Valley, but getting it is not random luck. It is the result of specific friendship and mood thresholds that determine whether a cow produces a standard Milk or a Large Milk at the start of the day.

The Escapist recaps

• Cows must have at least 200 friendship to qualify for Large Milk.
• Milk size is determined at the beginning of each day using a formula based on friendship and mood.
• Mood above 200 increases Large Milk odds through a multiplier in the production formula.
• Petting, feeding, and grazing directly affect friendship and mood, which in turn affect milk outcomes.

Large Milk requirements

Large Milk is produced by cows that meet a minimum friendship threshold. A cow must have 200 or more friendship points before it can produce Large Milk at all.

The cow must also be an adult. Cows mature after five nights have passed if they eat every day, and only adult cows can be milked.

If either condition is not met, Large Milk is not possible regardless of mood.

Milk production is decided at the start of the day

Milk size and quality are calculated at the very beginning of each in-game day using friendship, mood, and a random roll.

This timing matters. Petting or feeding after you wake up affects future production rolls, not the milk outcome for that same day. If you are trying to increase Large Milk frequency, your consistency from the previous day is what counts.

The Large Milk formula explained

Once a cow has at least 200 friendship, the game calculates a Large-product score using this formula:

(Friendship + (Mood × Mood Modifier)) / 1200

The result is compared to a random number between 0 and 1. If the score is higher than the random roll, the cow produces Large Milk.

How the Mood Modifier works

The Mood Modifier changes depending on the cow’s mood:

  • If Mood is above 200, mood is multiplied by 1.5.
  • If Mood is 100 or lower, the modifier becomes Mood − 100.
  • Otherwise, the modifier is 0.

In practice, this means mood above 200 significantly increases your Large Milk odds, while very low mood can reduce them sharply. Friendship unlocks the possibility — high mood accelerates it.

How to raise friendship efficiently

Friendship ranges from 0 to 1,000 points, with five hearts representing the maximum.

You can increase friendship through:

  • Petting (+15 per day, or +30 with Shepherd for barn animals).
  • Milking manually (+5 per interaction).
  • Letting cows eat grass outside (+8), or Blue Grass (+16).

You lose friendship if animals are not fed (−20), left outside overnight (−20), or ignored.

Consistent feeding and daily petting are the foundation of Large Milk production.

Managing mood for consistent Large Milk

Mood ranges from 0 to 255 and directly influences both Large Milk odds and quality rolls.

Several actions affect mood:

  • Eating grass outside sets mood to 255.
  • Petting increases mood, with doubled effects under Shepherd for barn animals.
  • Not feeding reduces friendship and blocks production entirely.
  • If Mood falls below 70, production may fail based on a probability check.

Heaters during winter and closing barn doors at night also contribute to maintaining higher happiness, which supports stronger production outcomes.

When mood regularly exceeds 200 and friendship continues rising toward 1,000, Large Milk becomes far more consistent.

Large Milk and cheese quality

Large Milk has another advantage beyond its sell price. When processed in a Cheese Press, Large Milk produces gold-quality Cheese, while normal Milk produces normal-quality Cheese.

Milk star quality does not carry into cheese quality — only milk size matters.

For farms focused on dairy income, increasing Large Milk frequency improves both raw sale value and artisan output.

Ask The Escapist

How many hearts do I need for Large Milk?

You need at least 200 friendship points, which is equivalent to one heart, before a cow can produce Large Milk.

Why am I not getting Large Milk even with high hearts?

If mood is low or the random roll fails, the cow will produce normal Milk even above 200 friendship

Does petting after milking increase Large Milk chances that day?

No. Milk size is determined at the beginning of the day, so petting affects future rolls, not the current one.

Does iridium Milk make better cheese?

No. Cheese quality depends on milk size, not star quality, so Large Milk makes gold Cheese regardless of its star rating.
