Stolen Pixels #207: Resident Equality

It’s time for the mid-summer swim in the bargain bin to check out some games I missed when they were new. First up. Resident Evil 5.

Was it blatantly racist? Accidentally racist? Or just a harmless bit of fun? It was like one of those magic eye pictures. You either saw it or you didn’t. You either thought it was an illusion or you took it seriously.

Seems like a bit of a trap for the game designer. The zombies are black so the game is racist. But if the African zombies were white, that would be racist, too. Is there some magic mix, some ratio of black-to-white zombies that would have made it okay?

Beats me. I don’t see the percentage in worrying about the possible insult to Africans when the story itself is definitely an insult to everyone.

Shamus Young is the guy behind Twenty Sided, DM of the Rings, and Stolen Pixels, Shamus Plays, and Spoiler Warning. And none of that is his day job.
