Gearbox’s loot-shooter franchise was something of a gamble for the studio when it launched in 2009, but it’s since kick-started a series that even got a feature film starring Cate Blanchett. Taking the loot-driven chase of Diablo and putting it into a first-person shooter with a cartoonish art style and even zanier characters turned out to be a spark of genius, and the most recent entry, 2025’s Borderlands 4, brings all of that together with fresh traversal mechanics and an open world.
