This guide focuses on major progression milestones and how to reach them despite the limitations. Rather than breaking down specific gear recommendations or boss strategies, our goal is to help you overcome the trickiest roadblocks without spoiling the experience. With that said, here’s how to beat the Skyblock challenge seed.
The Escapist recaps
- Skyblock is a challenging seed in Terraria added in Update 1.4.5 that spawns players on a small floating island with little to no resources.
- Starting with almost nothing, you’ll need to overcome major progression milestones, from the Eye of Cthulu all the way to the Moon Lord.
- On this journey, you’ll learn how to create efficient mob farms, build artificial biomes, and master fishing to get the gear needed to beat the game.
- This mode challenges both your old and new knowledge of how Terraria works, forcing even veteran players to rethink how they approach the sandbox.
What is the Skyblock seed in Terraria?
Skyblock is an official challenge seed in Terraria that spawns players on a single floating island made up of only dirt and clouds. All you have access to are basic tools, the Guide NPC, a Solidifier, and Slime spawns that can be farmed for early resources.
Outside of the main island, the only other location generated is a Shimmer island that spawns on either the far left or right edge of the world. These two islands are the only places that exist at the beginning of a new Skyblock save, forcing you to create everything else from scratch.
Getting Started
To begin your journey, farm slimes on the surface for gel and craft a Slime Spear. With this early upgrade, continue farming Slimes to gather more gel, which can be converted into Gel Blocks and Gel Walls using the Solidifier. Use these to create a house for the Guide to start your town, which you’ll want to expand whenever possible to house more NPCs.
Next, use Ropes dropped from the slimes to climb down to the Underground layer. Create a long horizontal bridge using Gel Blocks and farm enemies at this level for key early game resources. Here are the most useful Underground drops:
- Dirt
- Gel
- Ironskin Potion
- Pre-hardmore ores
- Rope
- Stone
- Swiftness Potion
- Wood
After gathering enough materials, create extra housing. This allows more NPCs to move in, giving you additional options to progress. Once the Merchant arrives, purchase an Anvil and craft a furnace. You should now craft the best armor possible, but avoid creating any weapons. Instead, purchase Grenades from the Demolitionist, as these outperform everything else at this stage.
Now you’re all geared up, it’s time to descend into the Cavern layer. Similar to the Underground, you’ll want to farm enemies at this level for their unique drops, with these being the most useful:
- Cloud in a Bottle
- Cobweb
- Conveyer Belt
- Extractinator
- Hermes Boots
- Life Crystal
- Magic Mirror
- Steak
Continue farming enemies in the Cavern layer until you reach at least 200 Health and can craft strong enough armor to survive the Underworld. It’s also highly recommended to acquire Roller Skates from the Skeleton Merchant as soon as possible, as they are the most powerful mount you will have access to for a long time.
Mob Farm
At this stage, you are ready to automate the farming process to make gathering important resources as easy as possible. Start by crafting a Bucket and build down to the Underworld using either Ropes or platforms. After descending, build another horizontal bridge long enough for enemies to spawn.
Aim to survive long enough to take down a Lava Slime and scoop up the lava it drops. With this lava and a few Conveyer Belts, you can construct a simple mob farm in the Cavern layer that automatically pushes enemies to their death. The easiest setup for this is to dig a trench at the end of the bridge, place lava in it, and position yourself underneath, allowing you to safely collect any drops.
Stay at this automated mob farm until you have enough resources to fight the Eye of Cthulu. This demonic creature can spawn naturally at night once you have 200 HP, 10 Defense, and four town NPCs. For a smooth fight, aim for 400 HP, a Platinum Bow, Flaming Arrows, and at least Silver armor.
Early Bosses
Before taking on your first major boss, build an arena to fight the Eye of Cthulu. Useful optimizations include hammering platforms into stairs for faster movement, placing a Campfire and Heart Lantern for health regen, and sealing off the sides to prevent wandering enemies from interrupting the fight.
When defeated, the Eye of Cthulu drops Demonite ore, a Demon Altar, and either Corrupt or Crimson Seeds. The altar can be used to create Suspicious Looking Eyes to farm this boss further. Otherwise, it’s time to create an artificial Underworld Corruption or Crimson biome, depending on your world. To do this, place at least 300 connected Dirt Blocks in the Underground, plant the seeds, and wait for them to spread.
In the meantime, focus on gathering two Lava Buckets. You can obtain lava by defeating Lava Slimes as before. Alternatively, fill up a Bucket using the rain, create an infinite water setup, then transport the resulting Water Buckets to the Shimmer Island for conversion. This latter method is more time-consuming, but gives you access to the Shimmer to transform and decraft items.
Pour the two Lava Buckets over your artificial lake to create Obsidian. Mine the Obsidian with a Platinum Pickaxe, process it through an Extractinator to obtain Sand, smelt the Sand, and craft a Bottle. Placing a Bottle on a workbench unlocks potion crafting, as well as the crafting recipes needed to spawn the next major boss.
Return to your Corruption or Crimson biome to collect necessary materials. In Corruption worlds, you’ll need 6 Vile Mushrooms and 15 Rotten Chunks. In Crimson Worlds, farm 6 Vicious Mushrooms and 15 Vertebra instead. Use these materials to craft either Worm Food or Bloody Spine, which are required to spawn and defeat the World Evil bosses.
Skeletron
Once defeated, the World Evils drop Dungeon bricks and Cursed Dungeon Walls, along with their regular loot. At this point, Meteor Showers can also begin spawning, giving access to Meteorite armor and weapons. For the next step, you’ll need to defeat Skeletron.
Begin by placing Dungeon Bricks on the surface, ideally near the arena you built for Eye of Cthulu. Be sure to save at least 250 bricks for later and avoid placing any Cursed Walls for now. Once the bricks are in place, move away and wait until night. After some time, the Old Man will spawn.
When you’re geared up, talk to him at night to fight Skeletron. If your Dungeon Bricks are near your existing arena, reuse it to make this encounter easier. Defeating Skeletron unlocks Dungeon access, allowing you to create an artificial Dungeon biome using your remaining bricks and Cursed Dungeon Walls.
While not needed for progression, it is recommended to create a Dungeon biome. Doing so gives you access to the Mechanic NPC, Bones, and several Dungeon-exclusive upgrades through fishing. To fish efficiently, use an infinite water setup to create an artificial lake of at least 300 tiles. This same principle applies to most biomes and remains one of the reliable ways to upgrade gear throughout Skyblock.
Wall of Flesh
It’s finally time to take on the Wall of Flesh and unlock Hardmode. Extend your Underworld bridge to give enough space for the encounter. Alternatively, crafting Minecart Tracks and a Minecart provides a reliable strategy to outrun the Wall of Flesh, even on Expert and Master difficulty. For added survivability, consider placing Campfires and Heart Lanterns across the bridge.
As you build, keep an eye out for Voodoo Demon spawns. These can be killed for a Guide Voodoo Doll, which you’ll need to summon the boss. After gearing up, build a small lava pit at the end of your bridge and throw in the doll to begin the fight. Persevere and defeat the Wall of Flesh to unlock Hardmode.
Early Hardmode
After entering Hardmode, your priority is to create an artificial Hallow biome. Purchase Hallow Seeds from the Dryad and plant them on a line of dirt on the surface. It’s worth repeating this in the Cavern layer too, as you’ll need an Underground Hallow to farm Souls of Light, as well as an Underground Crimson or Corrupted biome to farm Souls of Night.
While you wait for those biomes to spread, head back to your original Cavern mob farm. Several new Hardmode-exclusive drops are available from here, with these being the most useful:
- Beam Sword
- Hardmode ores
- Marrow
- Mechanical Eye, Mechanical Skull, and Mechanical Worm
- Mimic uniques
Continue farming Hardmode ores until you have enough to craft a Hardmode Anvil and a Hardmode Forge. With these crafting stations unlocked, use any remaining resources to craft the strongest gear for your chosen class. Finally, expand your existing arena in preparation for the Mechanical Bosses.
Mechanical Bosses
With your early Hardmode preparation complete, it’s time to take on the Mechanical Bosses. Mechanical Eyes, Mechanical Skull, and Mechanical Worms can be obtained from your Mob Farm, which are necessary to spawn these bosses. Defeating all three is required to progress through Hardmode, and doing so will be your hardest challenge yet.
The order that you fight these bosses is optional, but it’s recommended to defeat The Destroyer, The Twins, and Skeletron Prime in that order. Something to keep in mind is that all three bosses drop unique crafting materials that can be used to upgrade gear between fights, making the other Mechanical Bosses easier. Once you’ve defeated all three, it’s time for a trip to the Jungle to battle Plantera.
Plantera
If you haven’t already, you’ll need to create an Undeground Jungle to fight Plantera. This can be done by crafting Mud Blocks (Dirt Blocks in water) and planting Jungle Grass Seeds on them. You’ll want to make this artificial biome as large as possible, as doing so makes valuable resources like Chlorophyte Ore and Life Fruits easier to farm.
At this stage, it’s also worth creating an artificial Glowing Mushroom biome using Mud Blocks and Mushroom Seeds. The Glowing Mushrooms can be combined with Chlorophyte Bars to create Shroomite Bars, providing access to better gear. Given how demanding Planera can be, every possible upgrade is worth your time.
To summon Plantera, you’ll have to wait for a Plantera Bulb to spawn naturally in your Underground Jungle. This shouldn’t take too long, but consider making a suitable arena with platforms, lighting, and health regen buffs while you wait. When you’re ready, destroy the bulb and defeat Plantera to unlock Golem, Spectre Bars, the Cyborg NPC, and both the Pumpkin Moon and Frost Moon events.
Golem
When Plantera is defeated, it will drop hundreds of Lihzahrd Bricks, Forbidden Lihzahrd Brick Walls, and a Lihzahrd Altar. These materials can be used to create an artificial Jungle Temple, which you’ll need to create to summon Golem.
To save time, build the temple in the same arena used for Planter. Just be sure to leave a large enough gap between the floor and your platforms to prevent Golem from escaping. With the right preparation, Golem is a surprisingly easy boss that shouldn’t cause you too much trouble. If you’ve managed to beat Plantera, Golem will be very manageable.
After completing the Jungle Temple, farm Lihzahrd enemies inside until you obtain a Lihzahrd Power Cell. Place this on the Lihzahrd Altar to summon Golem and start the fight. Defeat him to progress to the next stage, which unlocks the Lunatic Cultist and Martian Madness event.
Lunatic Cultist
Before you continue, it’s highly recommended to acquire a flying mount at this stage. The best options include Cute Fishron, Witch’s Broom, and UFO. Having permanent flight negates the need to create complex arenas and makes all three remaining encounters far more manageable.
When ready, return to your surface Dungeon to find four cultists worshipping a Mysterious Tablet. Kill them all to summon the Lunatic Cultist, a highly mobile boss that’s tricky to hit, making homing weapons the preferred choice. After defeating the Lunatic Cultist, four Celestial Pillars will spawn across your world, kickstarting the final phase of Terraria.
Celestial Pillars & Moonlord
As soon as the Lunatic Cultist is defeated, four Celestial Pillars will spawn across your world: Nebula, Solar, Stardust, and Vortex. In Skyblock, these pillars will typically spawn underneath existing bridges, making them a pain to deal with unless you have access to permanent flight.
These unusual bosses require you to defeat 100 enemies unique to each pillar to drop its shield. Once the pillar’s defenses are down, destroy the pillar itself and repeat this for all four. Dying during this phase will not wipe your progress, making it possible to brute force these by creating a nearby spawnpoint using temporary housing.
Make sure the final pillar you defeat doesn’t drop any endgame upgrades needed for your class, as you won’t have time to craft them. After the fourth and final pillar falls, you only have 60 seconds before Moon Lord appears. Make your final preparations, and good luck beating the Moon Lord. If you win, you have beaten the Skyblock challenge. If you lose, you’ll have to start over from the Lunatic Cultist.
Ask The Escapist
A Skyblock world can be created in Terraria by selecting the sapling icon on the world creation screen and choosing the Skyblock seed. Those looking for an even greater challenge can also combine Skyblock with other special seeds, such as For The Worthy or Remix.
The Skyblock seed is much harder than a standard playthrough due to its resource limitations. Acquiring gear often requires extensive grinding, as well as the creation of artificial biomes and fishing lakes. Without knowledge of these advanced systems, progress can be slow and frustrating.
Yes, the Skyblock seed can be cleared without the use of any exploits or unintended mechanics. However, not utilizing an infinite water source will make fishing far less accessible, especially in the early game before obtaining a Bottomless Water Bucket from the Angler.
