The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Trailer Is Nicolas Cage Playing Himself

The Cage-aissance is in full swing, and you haven’t hit the peak of your comeback until you’ve been asked to play yourself in a film. That’s exactly what Nicolas Cage is doing in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent as he takes on the literal role of his lifetime, and now we have the first trailer that lets us fully see the glory of Nic Cage as Nick Cage.

As the trailer makes clear, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is playing off of the weird cultural place that Nic Cage holds in the universe as both a well-respected actor and a beloved B-movie star. In the movie Cage plays a heightened version of himself, desperate for money and creatively bankrupt (so think actual Nic Cage like six years ago). He accepts an offer to go to the party of a fan of his (Pedro Pascal) for $1 million, but things get out of control when a CIA agent (Tiffany Hadish) recruits Cage to work for her and he’s thrust into an action-packed adventure.

The film also stars Sharon Horgan, Ike Barinholtz, Alessandra Mastronardi, Jacob Scipio, Lily Sheen, and Neil Patrick Harris. Produced by Lionsgate, this isn’t actually some independent film but something a big studio thinks could land a good amount of money, which given Cage’s recent track of kicking out well-reviewed, thought-provoking films is quite possible. Tom Gormican is directing the movie, which is something he hasn’t done since his first film, That Awkward Moment, came out in 2014.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent will release on April 22, 2022 in theaters.
