Some of the best PC games of all time are now free to download, or play in your browser.
Have a hankering to play Wolfenstein 3D, Commander Keen, Star Wars: Rebel Assault, or MechWarrior, but don’t have the discs or Steam files handy? The Internet Archive has you covered.
The popular non-profit this week put over 2,400 MS-DOS games and demos online, and they’re all free to download and/or play in your browser. The massive library means your favorite 90’s PC titles are likely included, or at the very least represented by a demo (which is the case with Doom, and others). Today’s addition of 2,400 files is part of a larger 6,000-plus item collective.
The deciding factor for which games are wholly represented, and which are mere demos is if the titles in question are currently for sale. The Command & Conquer series is available on Origin, for example, so only a few C&C demos are listed. There are a few exceptions to that rule, however, as Wolfenstein 3D (which is available on Steam) is represented by a full download, and not a demo.
While some of the collection can be played right in your browser of choice, many titles can also be downloaded via zip files. If the game you’re craving is available via download, you’ll probably have to get some virtuosity going, via Windows Virtual PC, DOSBox, or Wine.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some classic Sim City to play, giant orange monsters and all.
