Spider-Man 3 Will Feature Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange

Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as the world-bending Doctor Strange in Spider-Man 3, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cumberbatch will serve as a new mentor character to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, though how pivotal of a role he will play in the third film remains to be seen. We last saw the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s magic hero in Avengers: Endgame, which saw the death of Spider-Man’s previous mentor, Tony Stark.

It was recently revealed that Spider-Man 3 is picking up another, somewhat more interesting casting pick in Jamie Foxx as shocking villain Electro. Foxx had previously played Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 alongside Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man portrayal, leaving many to speculate that some sort of multiverse cross-over could be on the way. Now that Cumberbatch is reportedly bringing Doctor Strange’s interdimensional powers into the fold, hopes of a live-action Spidey cross-over have never been greater. It’s at least safe to say that Marvel has some interesting plans in store for comic book fans.

Meanwhile, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — which will be directed by Tobey Maguire Spider-Man series director Sam Raimi — is currently set to release March 25, 2022. The film was said to have some scary elements back when it was announced, though this information came before the previous director, Scott Derrickson, left the project due to creative differences.

Spider-Man 3 is currently scheduled to arrive Dec. 17, 2021, but with the coronavirus pandemic continuing to throw a wrench in the movie industry’s plans, it’s hard to say whether or not that date will stick.
