After several years in development, Sony has hired Michael Gordon to handle writing chores on the EverQuest movie adaptation.

Gordon, who most recently received a writing credit on the 2007 blockbuster 300, will adapt the popular MMOG to the big screen, while Avi Arad will serve as producer on behalf of Columbia Pictures. Arad’s previous credits include Spider-Man 3 and Ghost Rider. The movie has been rumored since early 2000, but Gordon will be the first writer to take on the project.

According to a report by IGN, the project is currently aimed at either a 2009 or 2010 release, and while no plot details have been released, will “feature some seminal characters from the game.”

First launched in 1999, EverQuest is one of the most popular MMOGs ever released. A sequel, EverQuest 2, was released in 2004.
