Among the Sleep Studio Rolls Out The Plan

This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

Krillbite’s The Plan is a short, sharp experimental deliberation on the meaning of life.

Among the Sleep, the horror game in which you play as a two-year-old child, is still in development, but that’s not all that the team at Norwegian studio Krillbite has been up to. Released yesterday, The Plan is “a free experimental self-discovery videogame, exploring issues of death and meaning.”

The Plan is inspired by our relationship to nature and the universe, and our fumbling in the dark looking for meaning,” Krillbite’s Adrian Tingstad Husby explained. “We wanted to make a game that was playable by everyone, accessible for those who don’t usually play as much and/or have little spare time. This is the reason for the short length and limited interactive challenges. It was also important for us to allow space for the theme to come across. The game doesn’t tell you to play, it just puts you in a context to explore at your own pace.”

As for why a small indie team is horsing around with diversions like The Plan when it should be getting on with the business of making Among the Sleep so I can finally play it, Husby said there’s a practical side to this sort of experimentation. “We think it’s vital to always keep our minds fresh by exploring new ideas like this. It even provides a lot of knowledge that we can bring back to the production of Among the Sleep,” he continued. As an example, he pointed out that the studio has never before published a game, “so even though The Plan is a small experimental side project, we’ve learned a lot about the process leading up to a release.”

The Plan is available now as a free download from Krillbite and is also up for voting on Steam Greenlight, which the team hopes will give it, and the studio, much wider exposure. I don’t want to say too much about the game itself – this is a journey best taken unspoiled – but it’s a lush, beautiful and oddly moving experience that gives me great hope for Among the Sleep.
