This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Developers will have a tailored version of Android for the wearable computing space to work with.

Smartwatch and wearable makers have been using Google’s Android OS as a foundation for quite some time, but Google is now going to tailor the operating system for wearable tech on its own.

Android Wear is the name of the new program, which is already live at developer.android.com/wear. Developers can now tweak their existing apps and software for the mobile space, particularly when it comes to notifications.

So when should we expect new hardware born from the new program? Google is “already working with several consumer electronics manufacturers, including Asus, HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung; chip makers Broadcom, Imagination, Intel, Mediatek and Qualcomm; and fashion brands like the Fossil Group to bring you watches powered by Android Wear later this year.”
