Anonymous Sources Slap-Fight Over PSP2 Rumors

IGN says it’ll fly and make you breakfast, MCV says that’s a load of nonsense. Who is to be believed when Sony themselves still deny its existence?

In a story that quickly made the rounds yesterday morning, IGN claims, by the means of “several credible sources,” that Sony’s as-of-yet-unannounced PlayStation Portable successor will be “packing multi-touch technology.” Furthermore, they claim that “the PSP 2 will feature a widescreen multi-touch interface comparable to that of the iPhone for both in-game control and menu navigation.” As Sony themselves tend to not comment on rumor or speculation, typically, this sort is quickly tossed around for the sake of discussion and then quickly dismissed until the next rumor rears its head.

But not this time. UK gaming website MCV (who was told by SCEE president David Reeves in December that there are “currently no plans for a PSP 2.”) decided to tap their own credible source who had seemed to get a kick out of IGN’s report.

“Clearly, being a quiet time of year, many, what we thought to be credible websites, are making up stories about PSP2,” quotes MCV, “and how it allows you to teleport across the globe, travel through time, and will be powered by the horns of baby rhinoceroses.”

Their source then goes on to make note of their sarcasm to get the point across as to how ridiculous they find IGN’s claims. I’d have to side with MCV’s source myself, as the idea of Sony going multi-touch for the next iteration of PSP sounds a bit too “follow the leader” for their style. If anything, the market is a bit too crowded these days as gamers will turn to the Nintendo DS for reliable touch screen gaming, with the rest of the world pulling out their iPhone’s.

Sony continuing to pursue the mobile market with a next generation of PlayStation Portable is all but inevitable, but until they say something first, it’s best to take all reports with a hefty grain of salt.
