Assassin’s Creed: Pirates Brings Naval Battles to Mobile Devices

Assassin’s Creed: Pirates continues Ubisoft’s annual tradition of publishing strategy games based on stealth platformers.

Over the past few years, Ubisoft has taken an experimental approach with Assassin’s Creed‘s mobile titles. Where the core series generally offers your typical sneak-stab-escape gameplay, Ubisoft keeps dipping its toes into strategy with a diplomatic board game for tablets and the Assassin’s Creed city-building simulator. With Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag launching later this year, 2013 will prove no different, except for a slight shift into the realm of pirate-focused naval battles. Assassin’s Creed: Pirates is an upcoming mobile strategy game that will combine treasure-hunting, exploration, and of course, tactical cannonball fights.

Set in the same time period as Assassin’s Creed IV, Pirates tells the story of Alonzo Batilla, a young pirate seeking the treasure of Olivier “La Buse” Levasseur. Players will be able to explore multiple 20km environments, engage in real-time naval battles, and upgrade their ships using plundered bounties and treasure. Being an Assassin’s Creed game, the Templars and Assassin’s Guilds also play a major role, as will historical figures like Blackbeard, Bellamy, and Hornigold.

I’m starting to suspect that someone on the Assassin’s Creed dev team secretly wishes they made strategy games instead of stealth-based platformers. Regardless, a new Assassin’s Creed spin-off that expands the universe, and experiments with the formula, doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all. Assassin’s Creed: Pirates launches for Android and iOS devices this fall.
