The Escapist recaps

  • After WWII, Soviet General Dragovich acquires the deadly Nova 6 gas and betrays his own men. He kills the World at War protagonist Dmitri Petrenko and imprisons his mentor Reznov, setting up the core conflict involving sleeper agents and biochemical weapons.
  • CIA operative Alex Mason is captured during the Bay of Pigs, tortured, and brainwashed through Dr. Steiner’s Numbers Program. Reznov disrupts the conditioning, pushing Mason to kill Dragovich, Kravchenko, and Steiner, ultimately helping the CIA stop a Nova 6 attack.
  • In the 1970s–80s, the USSR spy figure “Perseus,” CIA corruption, and illegal US nuclear plans (Project Greenlight) drive the events of Black Ops Cold War, where brainwashed operative Bell aids Adler’s team before being eliminated as a loose end.
  • Personal tragedy and US involvement in his country push drug lord Raul Menendez into terrorism, leading to the events of Black Ops 2, including Mason’s ambiguous death, global cyber-chaos, and massive geopolitical shifts that reshape the 2025 world.
  • The rogue CIA faction, Pantheon, weaponizes the failed Cradle program, creating a zombie-like bioweapon that was stopped in Black Ops 6. By 2035 (Black Ops 7), the world remains destabilized, Celerium technology has reshaped warfare, and Menendez is rumoured to still be alive after his apparent death at the hands of David “Section” Mason in BO2, the son of Alex Mason.

1945:

The story of Call of Duty: Black Ops begins in World at War. In this game, we are introduced to Dimitri Petrenko and Victor Reznov. These two would serve together on some of the worst battlefields in the Second World War and eventually seize victory in Berlin, where their campaign would end with Dimitri planting the Soviet flag atop the Reichstag.

After the end of the war, a gas-based chemical weapon was discovered by a high-ranking Soviet officer, General Nikita Dragovich, who was seeking to claim it for the Soviets before the West had a chance to. This gas, called Nova 6, was originally invented by German scientist Dr. Friedrich Steiner and causes near-instant death by asphyxiation and tissue corrosion. Dragovich would personally head up a mission alongside Viktor Reznov and Dimitri Petrenko.

Ultimately, they would find the gas, but in an interesting move, Dragovich would use the chance to test the gas on his own men, killing our POV character in World at War, Dimitri Petrenko. While Reznov was also set to be exposed to the gas, he would be saved at the last minute, as the British SAS would intervene, though he would witness the death of his close comrade and be taken to the Russian prison Vorkuta shortly after.

Dragovich and Steiner would escape, with Dragovich keeping Steiner due to his scientific expertise and knowledge of the Nova 6 gas.

1958:

In 1958, Eisenhower created Project Greenlight. This was created to respond to a potential invasion of European allies and would see nuclear bombs placed under major European cities. This project would be overseen by CIA Agent Hudson and, crucially, would not be disclosed to any of the US’s European allies.

1961:
While Black Ops may be the origin of some of our favourite maps, it also has one of the most impactful stories in the franchise. We jump forward to everyone’s favourite protagonist, CIA operative Alex Mason. He is sent on a mission to Cuba to assassinate Castro during the Bay of Pigs. The mission introduces us to Frank Woods, who accompanies Mason on this mission alongside another operative, Bowman.

The mission spirals out of control as, while the assassination is successful, the target turns out to be a body double. This leads Mason to be captured by the Cubans and turned over to Dragovich, who happens to be in Cuba facilitating relations between the Cubans and the Soviets. While Woods and Bowman manage to escape, Mason is presumed dead.

1963:

This leads Mason to be in Soviet captivity for 2 years in the russian prison Vorkuta, during which time he is experimented on and tortured. The nature of this experimentation relates to Dr. Steiner, who has gained the proficiency to implant subjects with sleeper agent programming. The plan aims to create sleeper agents capable of activation in Western Allied territories, enabling deeper subterfuge. Mason meets Victor Reznov, and the two form a bond, ultimately plotting a successful escape from Vorkuta.

This allows Mason to escape back to the US, though Reznov is not as lucky, driving off still being pursued, his fate unknown. However, before their escape attempt, Reznov had left Mason with a parting ‘gift’, interfering with Mason’s programming, implanting him with orders to kill those Reznov wished revenge on: Dragovich, Kravchenko, and Steiner. Not only did Reznov use Mason as the instrument to avenge Dimitri’s death, but he also wanted to help free his friend from their shared enemy’s control.

Upon his return to the US, Mason is debriefed by the CIA and President John F. Kennedy. In this meeting, Kennedy cleared Mason for further missions; however, during the conversation, Mason hallucinates that he is pulling a gun on the US president. This scene is later recontextualised to suggest Mason did actually kill JFK, though at minimum, it’s implied in the Black Ops timeline that the assassination of JFK was a result of sleeper agents in the numbers program.

1968:

At this point, Mason teams up with Woods and Bowman, who are fighting in Vietnam. There, Mason is handed intel by a Soviet defector. Due to the brainwashing, Mason believes this is Reznov, who had escaped Vorkuta; however, this is a hallucination, and in reality, the defector, while having the intel, is dead.

The intel reveals the Soviet plot to use sleeper agents to launch a Nova 6 attack on the US and its allies. This leads them to Steiner on Rebirth Island; however, in the process of capturing him, Mason’s brainwashing kicks in again, and acting on Reznov’s orders, he takes his revenge, killing Steiner. This is observed by other operatives on Rebirth Island who are now aware that Mason is being brainwashed by the numbers.

This leaves the CIA with no leads, except Mason, who can translate the numbers due to his programming. This brings us to the iconic setup for the game, as Mason is interrogated by Hudson as to the meaning of the numbers. Hudson is able to break through the brainwashing, and Mason makes the connection back to the Rusalka, a boat he saw in Cuba during his capture by Dragovich. This allows them to launch an attack on the Rusalka, where Mason kills Dragovich and, with hours to spare, stops the Nova 6 attack.

Enter Perseus, Patheon, and Raul Menendez

1970s:

This brings us to the 1970s, where Mason has the time to undo the effects of his brainwashing and goes off the grid. At this time, Mason presumably has his son, David Mason, who would grow up to be a JSOC commander known by the code name “Section” – more on him soon.

This period would see the rise of the Soviet bogeyman Perseus. While it is implied that Perseus was originally one spy, this would grow into a network all using the same name. This spy network would gain access to NATO and US intelligence, stealing nuclear secrets. This would attract the attention of CIA operative Russell Adler, who would begin working to track Perseus down. At the same time, Project Greenlight would upgrade the nukes into neutron bombs capable of eliminating the population of a city while keeping the infrastructure intact.

During this time, the seeds for later tragedy would also be sown. A young boy named Raul Menendez would witness the US-backed contras drive his country to chaos. At this time, an earthquake would devastate his family’s livelihood, and his sister would be caught in a warehouse fire started by its American owners over insurance money.

Though horribly disfigured by the fire, his sister would survive, and he would later go on to work with his father selling drugs to make money. They would be incredibly successful; however, the then-burgeoning Menendez cartel would become worrisome to the US government, which would later send in CIA operatives to assassinate his father. This left a deep hatred for the US within Menendez that would only grow deeper.

In the same decade, a group within the CIA, known as Pantheon, would initiate the Cradle program. This sought to create a super soldier using a biochemical agent. The program was tested on one subject, Case One, aka, who’d go on to become the CIA agent with the code name “Case”.

While the bioagent would initially enhance Case’s physical attributes, it would also lead to behavioral changes, increased aggressiveness, and violent outbursts. In one of these violent outbursts, the cradle agent was released throughout the facility by Case One, requiring the facility to be locked down and quarantined.

This would lead to Case requiring extensive rehabilitation that would see them lose their memories and identity, while funding for the project was pulled. The group known as Pantheon would be officially shut down by Daniel Livingstone. Although the group would keep power within the CIA, biding their time for revenge.

1980:

In 1980, Mason and Adler would run an ambush on some of Perseus’s men for intel. A single Perseus soldier would survive the ambush, and sensing an opportunity, Adler would take them back to base and subject them to intensive brainwashing. This would create our player character in Cold War, Bell, who, due to the brainwashing, believed they had always been a CIA operative.

1981:

In 1981, President Ronald Reagan approved a task force of Bell, Mason, Woods, Adler, and Hudson to hunt down Perseus. In the process, they would uncover the true reason for the mission. Perseus had found out about Project Greenlight and planned to use the bombs under European cities to launch a nuclear attack that would be traced back to the US.

They would shortly hit a dead end as to the location from which Perseus planned to launch the attack, but Adler chose to undo Bell’s programming to extract the necessary information.

In the canon ending, Bell provides the team with the necessary information and helps to take down Perseus, but shortly after, Adler decides to take care of loose ends and is implied to have killed Bell. This game also left the door open for connections to the Modern Warfare (2019) lore, though how this pays off is still to be seen.

Alex Mason’s story in Black Ops 2

1985:

At this point, we jump forward slightly in time to the mid-1980s. While Alex Mason has been in semi-retirement raising his son, David Mason. His old ally, Woods, gets captured in Angola by the now-powerful Menendez cartel due to his involvement with the CIA. This would bring Mason out of retirement to rescue Woods. The mission would be successful, but Woods had suffered extensive torture at the hands of Menendez.

After this, Mason and Woods would hunt down the location of Menendez for revenge, and once they had his location, the CIA launched an operation to take him out. The mission, however, ends chaotically as Mason and Woods successfully assault the facility, although Menendez was able to break captivity. The now-freed Menendez rushes to save his sister, whom he hears screaming. Woods, wanting revenge, throws a grenade into the room with Menendez and his sister. This kills Menendez’s sister but leaves Menendez alive, who would now be set on a course of revenge against the US at all costs – driven mad by his grief.

1989:

At this point, Menendez has multiple contacts within the CIA and uses them to orchestrate his plan behind Operation Just Cause. This operation would act as a cover to send Mason and Woods into Panama. Menendez had kidnapped Hudson and Mason’s son, David, and then kidnapped Mason himself. At this point, he would manipulate Hudson into relaying fake orders to Woods, ordering Woods to shoot a bagged prisoner who would be revealed to be Alex Mason. This would eventually become the canonical ending.

After this, Menendez then captures Woods and shoots both of his kneecaps and kills Hudson in front of him. He would then leave Woods and David alive to suffer with what Menendez had done to them before leaving, promising to return. Woods, now wheelchair bound, would adopt David and raise him as a soldier to atone for his mistakes.

The CIA and David would grieve the loss of Mason and Hudson and swear revenge on Raul Menendez, whose shadow continued to loom over them.

The story of Black Ops 6

1991:

In the aftermath of Operation Just Cause, Adler would be implicated as Menendez’s mole in the CIA and would go into hiding. This is because the CIA has now been overtaken by Pantheon, a rogue group of CIA agents attempting to take over the organisation. At the same time, following the fallout of Operation Just Cause, Woods would rejoin the CIA, acting as an advisor due to his field experience.

Cradle project survivor Case, still missing their memories and unaware of their almost superhuman abilities, would join the team, essentially replacing Bell and Mason. Woods would inherit Hudson’s role and then send them on a mission to the Iraq-Kuwait border to extract a target, where Adler would emerge from hiding, kill the target, and leave a cryptic message for Woods. As Woods suspected the involvement of moles in the CIA, he would not inform his superiors of the message’s meaning and would be suspended alongside Case. This message would lead Woods to a safe house where he would realise the conspiracy and work with Case alongside other rogue operatives to thwart Pantheon.

After the Cradle program was shut down, Pantheon would co-opt Volkuta to use the basement for refining the agent. They created a version that focused on the negative side effects, creating a zombie-like virus, and planned to use it to launch a false-flag chemical attack on the US. This would enable them to consolidate power and gain greater control over the US.

This plan is stopped by Woods, Adler, and our player character, Case. However, in the process of stopping the plan, Case is caught in a helicopter crash, and their fate is left unknown. In the aftermath, Pantheon remains active, and Black Ops 6 leaves the door open for their and Case’s return.

There’s a lot of missing time between Black Ops 6 and the second half of Black Ops 2’s story, suggesting that future Call of Duty games will bridge this gap. It’s also worth noting that, due to Black Ops Cold War implying the Modern Warfare remakes are part of this timeline, their stories would take place at this point, between now and the second half of Black Ops 2

1991-2025:

This brings us to the second part of the Black Ops 2 story. Between 1991 and 2025, Frank Woods would raise David Mason, who would later follow in his father’s footsteps and join the elite military group JSOC. At the same time, Menendez would begin to rapidly gain power through his terroristic political group Cordis Die. This group would gain over two billion followers as it overthrew political regimes in downtrodden countries.

This was mainly achieved by creating political chaos, which was largely Menendez’s true aim. They would also hack the Chinese stock market, causing a stock market crash and creating extreme economic tension between the US and China.

This was only made worse by the discovery of the rare earth mineral Celerium, which had the potential to enable large technological innovations. In the wake of this, China is expected to block exports of rare earth elements in 2025. The Chinese military would also establish the Strategic Defense Coalition (SDC); this military alliance would serve as a counterforce to NATO and heighten military tensions to the point of surpassing those of the Cold War.

In 2025, with the stage set, Menendez would appear before Woods, holding his sister’s pendant, and give Woods a clear warning of his destructive intentions. Menendez would use David’s want for revenge to lead him on a goose chase, ultimately allowing himself to be taken aboard the USS Obama.

This would lead Cordis Die to launch an attack on the vessel as Menendez headed to the bridge and took control of the US’s drone fleet. This cyberattack would ultimately cause chaos worldwide, and although Menendez is ultimately stopped, the damage was already done.

Section/David would kill Menendez, avenging his father and Hudson, but the villain would then release a video encouraging his followers to rise up all around the world.

The future of Black Ops

The world would be radically changed by Menendez’s actions. A new drone act would be passed, limiting their use, and the EU would fall shortly after, while Russia subsumed European countries, becoming more powerful than ever.

The discovery of Celerium would also kickstart a new age of technological development, leading to the potential for the augmentations and tech seen in Black Ops games 3 and 4. While Black Ops 3, especially, has its own lore, breaking down its story as of now is very self-contained, being set in 2065 with minimal ties to the prior lore – though it is part of the same timeline.

Although Black Ops 7 is set to take place in 2035 and follow directly on from the ending of Black Ops 2. It appears that Menendez somehow survived and will be making a return. Whether this is a more metaphorical resurrection or a literal one remains to be seen, but David “Section” Mason is not yet through with Menendez.
