Bulgarian City Councilor Fired Over FarmVille

A councilor from the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv has been fired from his municipal committee because he refused to stop playing FarmVille during city council meetings.

The trouble first came to light a few weeks ago when several Plovdiv city councilors were caught playing FarmVille during debates over the city’s 2010 budget. Council Chair Ilko Iliev “strongly scolded the eager internet farmers,” who nonetheless continued to spend time on their farms while attending council meetings.

Finally, during a meeting last Thursday, councilor Dimitar Kerin, described as “the most persistent FarmVille enthusiast,” was voted off his municipal committee because, said fellow councilor Todor Hristov, he “needs more time for his virtual farm.” While Kerin will remain on council, he will lose the additional pay he was earning as a member of the committee.

But he’s not leaving without a fight. “The troubled councilor has defended himself by saying he was not the only one in the City Hall watering virtual egg plants,” according to a report by Novinte.com. “He said he had reached only Level 40, whereas Daniela Zhelyazkova, a councilor from the rightist Democrats for Strong Bulgaria party, was already at Level 46.”

So maybe the problem here isn’t that Kerin is playing too much FarmVille. Maybe he got fired because he sucks.
