CastleStorm Debuts With Irreverent, Viking-Heavy Trailer

This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

Zen Studios, the people behind the phenomenal Pinball FX series, have launched their next title, CastleStorm.

Superficially described as a strategy title, CastleStorm is more accurately viewed as a tower defense game with third-person shooter mechanics, elements of strategy and roleplaying games, and an irreverent sense of humor. The game’s launch trailer, which you can find embedded at right, doesn’t really do a great job of portraying the game’s mechanics – though in fairness you can’t get a good feel for them without playing the game – but it does serve up healthy doses of its sense of humor.

Notice that sheep seconds in? There’s a lot of that. Zen Studios has a thing for sheep.

I’ve spent the last few days with a preview copy of CastleStorm, and while I won’t claim that it’s more addictive than the Pinball FX titles – nothing is, really, short of Peggle or Diablo II – I will state that the game’s physics-based action elements blend ingeniously with its strategic leanings. Again, it’s a very difficult game to describe owing to its unique blend of normally disparate play styles, but once you’ve got a grasp on how things work, it’s the sort of smaller title that will absorb hours of your life before you even know it.

If any of this has piqued your interest, you can download CastleStorm right this very moment for only $10. Unfortunately for those of you with undying devotion to Sony consoles, CastleStorm is currently only available on the Xbox Live Arcade. It’s quite likely that this may change in the future, assuming CastleStorm is a hit, but for now consider this another notch on Microsoft’s exclusivity bed post. Whatever that means.
