Collegiate Teams Can Win Scholarships Through League of Legends

League of Legends NACC

Highly skilled League of Legends players in college could help pay for college by reaching the championships of the League of Legends NACC.

Four teams competing in the 2014-2015 League of Legends North American Collegiate Championship will receive scholarship money toward their undergraduate education in the United States and Canada. After a successful collegiate competition last year, this year’s NACC is even bigger.

The League of Legends NACC this year spans the academic year across four regions: North, South, East, and West. Teams may compete in any of the qualifiers hosted by IvyLOL, Collegiate Star League, TeSPA, or WellPlayed. The four partners have a history of running League of Legends tournaments. Regional winners from each event qualify for the championship tournament. However, a team that has qualified for the NACC playoffs may not participate in a different qualifier.

The team that achieves first place in the championship earns a $30,000 scholarship for each team member. Second place winners earn a $15,000 scholarship. Third and fourth place winners earn a $7,500 scholarship. Students who already have a full-ride scholarship may ask for other expenses (such as housing, meal plans, books) to be covered by the scholarship.

A team is comprised of competitors from the same school. Teams will have five players and one sub, and all six competitors will earn scholarship money if they place in the top four.

Registration for the Ivy League of Legends and Collegiate Star League tracks are open until October 16, while TeSPA’s registration will be open from January 15, 2015, to February 13, 2015. Well Played’s registration will be open from February 23, 2015, to March 5, 2015. Interested competitors should look through the NACC’s FAQ and check if their school qualifies.

Riot expects the championship will be held around April or May 2015.
