Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Gets New Post-Apocalyptic Trailer

This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Gary Oldman readies humanity for gorilla warfare in the new trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Warning: Spoilers up ahead.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was probably one of the more delightful surprises of 2011. A reboot of a classic franchise, it not only did its source material justice but also arguably ascended the original Apes movies in many regards. To put things shortly, it was a good movie that left plenty of room for a sequel. Dawn of The Planet of the Apes, originally announced last year, will be that sequel and, if a recently released trailer is any indicator, it looks to be shaping up into a worthy follow-up to the first film.

As the trailer begins, we’re informed by Gary Oldman’s disembodied megaphone voice that things have kind of gone badly for the human race in the wake of the monkey revolution Caeser led in Rise. Humanity has been devastated by the artificial virus James Franco’s character was working on and the years since have been a chaos of civil war and infighting as the survivors have struggled to bring themselves back from the brink.

From there, it’s heavily implied that the humans are readying themselves to fight against Caeser’s band of intelligent apes who happen to live nearby. There’s not much given to indicate exactly why Oldman and his cohorts would want to fight a tribe of super smart chimps, but we’ll trust that the movie will provide some good reasons. The trailer ends with Caeser looking a bit less amicable than he was in the original movie.

To its credit, the trailer is fairly gripping and does a good of selling the sequel. Then again, all they really had to do was reiterate that Andy Serkis will be returning to do the motion capture for Caeser. After his stellar performance in Rise that would have been more than enough to convince me to buy a ticket for Dawn. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is currently set to open in theaters in July 2014.
