Donald Glover to Become (Animated) Spider-Man

This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Community star will finally get to be Spider-Man as an animated Miles Morales

In 2010, back before Sony’s reboot of the Spider-Man franchise had selected Andrew Garfield as its new Peter Parker, then-Community star Donald Glover expressed interest in the role on social media. As this hypothetical casting would have made Glover the first black Spider-Man, it touched off a huge debate in fandom circles; and helped inspire Ultimate Spider-Man comic writer Brian Michael Bendis to create Miles Morales – a half-black/half-latino teenager who takes over for the deceased Peter Parker of the alternate “Ultimate” Marvel Universe.

Now, Glover will get to become the character he helped to inspire: While Disney XD’s animated Ultimate Spider-Man animated series (which is not an adaptation of the Ultimate comics despite the name) has stuck with a traditional Peter Parker as its main character, the impending third season – re-branded with the subtitle Web Warriors – will feature a running mult-episode storyline in which Peter will encounter Spider-Men (and woman) from alternate dimensions… including Glover as the voice of the first animated incarnation of Miles Morales.

While many plot details have yet to be unveiled for the new season (which will also feature Spider-Man joining The Avengers), it was previously revealed that in addition to Miles the roster of alternate Spider-Men will include Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Man 2099, a new version of Spider-Girl and Peter Porker: The Spectacular Spider-Ham.
