Early Designs Show a Young Maleficent Covered in Feathers Rather Than Hair

This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Catch a glimpse of what Maleficent originally looked like with a tuft of feathers instead of hair.

If you’ve seen Disney’s Angelina Jolie-starrer Maleficent, based on the Sleeping Beauty villain, then chances are you know that under that snazzy headdress is a head full of hair. However, what you probably didn’t know is that early concept designs showed a younger Maleficent that looked a lot more odd, and was even covered in feathers. Revealed by concept artist Luca Nemolato is his take on what the young Maleficent looked liked from early on in the film’s pre-production stages. While the character is nowhere near normal looking, adding feathers around her head makes her seem a little too weird, which might just be me.

With Maleficent making money for Disney, the company is now looking to create a live-action film on its other well-known animated properties such as a live-action adaptation of Cinderella, a live-action/CGI hybrid of The Jungle Book, and even one based on Beauty and the Beast.

For more Maleficent stuff here on The Escapist, make sure you watch Bob “MovieBob” Chipman’s Escape to the Movies video highlighting Maleficent. Just know that there are a few spoilers within, so proceed at your own risk.

What do you think of Nemolato’s concept designs? Would you have preferred that over what Disney ended up with now?
