ESA Foundation praises Valve’s founder at the 2012 ‘Nite to Unite – For Kids’.

The Entertainment Software Association Foundation (ESAF) has chosen Gabe Newell, Valve’s founder, as its honoree at the 2012 black-tie event ‘Nite to Unite – For Kids’. Newell is being singled out for praise thanks to his work with schools and students, expanding access to digital learning particularly in physics, mathematics and language arts.

“Gabe is a visionary innovator for our industry,” said the ESAF in its official release, “and his success has broadened the industry for gamers and game creators alike.” The Nite to Unite is a time when industry leaders celebrate continuing growth and success, while at the same time noting the industry’s efforts to make a difference in the lives of America’s youth. Past honorees include Mike Morhaime, co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, and George Lucas.

The Nite itself is a charity occasion – complete with casino tables – where money is raised to further support the ESAF’s goals. In the past it has provided scholarships to deserving students, and funded the Art of Video Games exhibit that debuted at the Smithsonian this year. Over the years, the Nite to Unite has raised more than $11 million for charity.
