Final Fantasy XVI finally reappeared during today’s June 2022 State of Play, delivering a nice long look at the latest entry in Square Enix’s bestselling not-so-RPG-anymore franchise and a release date window of summer 2023. There’s a lot to digest in the new Final Fantasy XVI trailer, including lots of explosive gameplay and a tease of the game’s world and characters.

A PlayStation.Blog post made its way online shortly after today’s State of Play, revealing some behind-the-scenes details about Final Fantasy XVI. Although the team still has much to accomplish before launch, Square Enix says the game’s current build is playable from start to finish. The rest of the development will focus largely on polishing the experience before that summer 2023 window rolls around. Final Fantasy XVI takes place in Valisthea and follows protagonist Clive Rosfield. Today’s “Dominance” trailer introduced more major players, too, including Hugo Kupka and Benedikta Harman. How the story will shake out is anyone’s guess, but it’s clear that this could be the most epic entry in the franchise yet.

It’s always nice to see Final Fantasy show up at one of these events, so it was even better to see producer Naoki Yoshida appear to introduce fans to the new trailer. Check back soon for additional new details on this action RPG.
