Football Hero: Rock Out With Your Soccer Balls Out

This article is over 15 years old and may contain outdated information

What do you get when you mix Kasabian, soccer and an excess of spare time? Football Hero, a custom-built version of Guitar Hero played on a three-story-high screen by “freestyle footballers.”

The basics of Football Hero should be instantly recognizable: Pushing buttons to match colored blocks that slide down a screen in time with music. But this time around, the screen is a projection on a giant wall, the buttons are large, custom-built pads and the pushing is done with soccer balls kicked by a group of “insanely gifted young freestyle footballers.”

It’s not an exact match of Guitar Hero, of course; the game is programmed with one track, Kasabian’s “Underdog,” and has been simplified somewhat to accommodate the natural limitations of a huge, footie-based videogame controller. When all is said and done, however, the results are better than I would have expected: After only 17 games (and, I would imagine, a lot of practice) the group manages a 76 percent accuracy rating and a ten note accuracy streak.

Two videos of the event are available: The “performance,” which shows the players doing their thing, and the “making of” video, a look at the time and effort that went into setting this whole thing up. I’m not sure what the point was, but I have to admit, I’m impressed.
