Google Japan’s April Fools’ Turns Party Horns Into Input Devices

This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

Google Japan has given us yet another… interesting input device for its April Fools’ Day prank.

When it comes to April Fools, Google is one of the best, and its cousin over in Japan is no different. Last year we saw the “Magic Hand” input device, and now its back with another… interesting way to input commands to your smartphone: “Japanese Input: Piro Piro version”.

Piro piro is Japanese onomatopoeia for the sound that party horns make, and the prank is based around turning the “beloved” party favor into a way to type Japanese characters on your android device.

Check out the adorable video to the right, complete with super serious Japanese scientists, and a “mouth free” version that has to be seen to believed.

The device “works” by measuring the “blow” made by the user into the party horn using an infrared sensor, inputting a specific Japanese character according to the length of the horn.

The attention-to-detail on the joke is just top notch – the kind of thing only Google can do – going so far as to travel to “Awaji Island” to see where party horns are made.

Stay tuned for more April Fools jokes from Japan, and of course, the American ones that should hit today! Remember kids, don’t believe anything you read on the internet for the next 48 hours!
