HBO Considering Tales of Dunk and Egg Series, Game of Thrones Prequel

HBO remains determined to expand the Game of Thrones universe, with Variety reporting that the company has started work on a new prequel series. This series would be based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, which tell tales of Daenerys Targaryen’s great-grandfather Aegon V and a knight named Ser Duncan the Tall almost a century before the War of the Five Kings.

As yet, no writers, directors, or prospective cast members are attached, but Variety reports that the series is a “high priority” for HBO. Nonetheless, neither HBO nor Martin provided comment on the existence of the series.

To date, Martin has written three Tales of Dunk and Egg stories (The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight) and expressed an interest in more. Those three stories were collated and published as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2015.

If the prospective Tales of Dunk and Egg series moves ahead, it will be the second prequel to enter full development. The network is already working on House of the Dragon, which is set 300 years before Game of Thrones and set to debut some time next year. The network previously shelved another would-be series that was planned to be set several thousand years earlier in the Game of Thrones timeline.
