According to the latest issue of Japanese gaming mag Famitsu, a 1080p remake of cult favorite Katamari Damacy is on its way to the PlayStation 3.
Let’s just get one thing straight – I freakin’ loved Katamari Damacy. It’s easily one of my favorite games of the last console generation, if not of all time. With its quirky aesthetic, relentlessly catchy J-(Genre) soundtrack, and brilliantly unique and intuitive gameplay, Katamari was one of those came-out-of-nowhere titles that was suddenly a must-own.
Apparently, I’m not the only one who thinks so. Namco is paying tribute to the beloved PS2 game with the, uh, fittingly named Katamari Damacy TRIBUTE. From what we can gather, TRIBUTE is a remake of the first game, only made to output in full high-definition glory: TRIBUTE will support 1080p.
It won’t just be the graphics that are getting an upgrade, either – there will be many more items scattered through the Katamari world for the Prince of All Cosmos to roll up, there will be a new black-and-white stage, and a new gameplay mode (though what exactly said gameplay mode will be, we haven’t the foggiest).
According to Kotaku, the Famitsu article says that the game will include music from “Leah Dizon and YMCK, among others,” which is the one thing that concerns me. The original Katamari‘s soundtrack was absolutely fantastic – if you’re going to remake it, why not include all the classic tunes we know and love?
Sing it with me, everybody: Naaaaaaa, na na na na na na naaaa, Katamari Damacy~!
