Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive developer Insomniac wants to experiment with indie game design.

If you ask the team at Insomniac, they consider themselves as indie developers. Technically, Insomniac is independent in its game development. In fact, their founder and current CEO spent his life savings to create the company’s first game demo. Still, the team recognizes that they make AAA games and decided they wanted to experiment with indie game development.

Slow Down, Bull is a small game in development by a team of four to five people using the Unity development environment. In the game, players are tasked with keeping a bull named Axel calm. Axel is described as being a stressed-out overachiever that becomes increasingly agitated as he collects “beautiful things”. As Axel becomes more stressed, he will throw a tantrum and begin to destroy the collected items.

Besides experimenting with indie-style game design, Insomniac is sharing the process with the gaming community. On Fridays at 2 pm Pacific time (5 pm Eastern), the Insomniac Games Twitch channel will stream the Slow Down, Bull team at work on the small PC title, starting tomorrow.

Games are fun to play, and Twitch has proven that it’s fun to watch people play games. Is it fun to watch people make games? We’ll find out tomorrow. In either case, even while Insomniac Games is busy with Sunset Overdrive and the Ratchet & Clank movie and game, it’s encouraging to see the team still has such a passion for games and game design to initiate this experiment with development.
