Warner Bros. announced today that it will release the last two Harry Potter films in 3D when they come out on Blu-Ray.
After pulling the plug on a 3D conversion for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 due to worries that it would not be completed for its November 19th release date, Warner Bros. said that it has employed Prime Focus to do a 3D conversion of the last two films: Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince. The studio isn’t saying when to expect such a conversion to be completed, giving Prime Focus time that it didn’t have for Clash of the Titans. Both Prime Focus and WB got flack for the botched 3D conversion of Clash, and that’s not something either want to repeat. The lack of a hard deadline or public release date will allow the conversion to be given as much time as it needs.
Even though director David Yates is concentrating on editing Deathly Hallows without worrying about 3D conversion just yet, it’s probably a good bet that all four Yates’ directed films will get a 3D conversion. We still don’t know about years One through Four but such a conversion would likely need input from the directors of those films (Chris Columbus, Mike Newell and Alfonso Cuaron.)
I’m not sure that all movies need to be released in 3D, but the visual-heavy Harry Potter series like a perfect fit for the 3D eye candy. Such an experience might be OK in the home, with an expensive TV and heavy glasses, but I hope that WB re-releases the earlier films all in 3D in time for the last film: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
That way, I can have a massive 3D viewing session. And then throw up from vertigo…
