LittleBigPlanet, Guitar Hero, Rock Band on PSP?

Sony has a trio of hot games it would like to see hit its portable.

Admit it, the PSP is sucking out in the release department this holiday season. That doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of cool things that could be done with the handheld next year, provided developers get their crap in gear. When it came to questions about whether Sony will pursue LittleBigPlanet, Guitar Hero and perhaps even Rock Band titles for the PSP, SCEA’s head of hardware marketing John Koller didn’t rule out the possibilities.

Last month, a job posting seeking programmers with PSP experience for “exciting new LittleBigPlanet projects” fanned the flames of ongoing rumors of a portable version of the title in the works. In an interview with MTV Multiplayer this week, Koller said the development team is concentrating on making sure the PS3 title meets its full expected potential, and careful attention is being given to how user-generated content is playing out.

Though he didn’t confirm a handheld LBP, his comments contain a kernel of hope for Sackboy fans. “For the future, I think certainly, we’d look at a wide variety of opportunities. Whether that’s the PSP or not, I can’t really say,” he said. “We certainly look at LittleBigPlanet franchise as a going forward franchise for us, and that speaks to the PlayStation brand overall.”

When asked about the possibility of the PSP seeing a Guitar Hero or Rock Band variant, Koller said those titles, and rhythm games in general, are of great interest to Sony. Music and the social interaction that comes along with it are two critical components for the handheld, he said, adding the second biggest use of the PSP is for listening to music.

“So, the marrying of those two concepts is of huge interest to us, and if there’s that opportunity to launch a title like that or even a new title that utilizes music in some way, then obviously we’re very interested,” he said.
