Lollipop Chainsaw has set a record as Grasshopper Manufacture’s best-shipping game ever.
Lollipop Chainsaw is apparently some kind of Buffy-esque do-over with zombies instead of vampires and a belt-mounted head instead of a smoldering studmuffin. (I learned everything I know about it from Zero Punctuation, so take it for what it’s worth.) I don’t really see the appeal but I seem to be in the minority in that regard, because Grasshopper Manufacture CEO Suda 51 announced at the Lollipop Chainsaw Summer Appreciation Festival this past weekend that it’s his most popular game ever.
Worldwide shipments for Lollipop Chainsaw have broken 700,000 units, according to Kadokawa Game CEO Yoshimi Yasuda, which Suda 51 said is the highest shipment figure ever achieved by a Grasshopper game. That’s shipped, not sold, but a record is a record, and while 700,000 units shipped doesn’t sound like too much to get excited about in this era of Call of Duty and Madden, it was explained to me that this Mr. 51 fellow is rather like a Japanese Tim Schafer: Everyone thinks he’s awesome, but his oddball, “cult favorite” games just doesn’t sell.
To celebrate the new high-water mark, Suda 51 showed off the first-ever promo trailer for Grasshopper’s new project, Killer is Dead, which reportedly showed a man with a cyborg left arm and a katana in his opposite hand engaged in combat. Suda said the game will feature a new hero and “lots of hot girls.”
