The financial struggles of Mortal Kombat publisher Midway have forced the publisher to auction off all of its assets — a boon for anyone hoping to own the rights to Sinistar.
As of June 2, Midway will begin offering its assets to anyone with enough cash. Bids will be accepted until June 24.
Once the bids have been tallied, Midway’s financial adviser Lazard will conduct an auction to “determine the bid or combination of bids that achieves the highest value, followed by a court hearing to approve the sale to the winning bidder or bidders on July 1st, and then a final closing.”
Assets on the chopping block include Midway’s classic gaming series, such as Robotron, Frogger and Joust.
Not up for sale however, are the rights to the Mortal Kombat series. Those are most likely going to Warner Bros. as part of the company’s recently revealed bid for the ruins that once were Midway.
While my birthday isn’t until September, I think this is an excellent time to remind everyone that I’ve always wanted to own the rights to Spy Hunter. I’m not saying I wouldn’t create a film adaptation of the series starring the reanimated corpse of Steve McQueen, but I can promise that I would never, ever turn the game into a theme park ride.
Unless I could earn some serious scratch that way.
