Minecraft: The Story of Mojang Documentary Hits Youtube

This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

The full-length movie breaks the hit game down, block by block.

The art of gaming, while young, is full of stories. There’s the tale of how Carmack and company founded first-person shooters and internet deathmatches, and the related collapse of Ion Storm. More recently, a Swedish man with a fondness for hats has swept the world with a lo-fi game about building stuff. Back in 2011, 2 Player Productions crowdfunded a documentary exploring how exactly Minecraft became such a zeitgeist. Now, the entire one-and-a-half hour film is on YouTube, for all to see.

Minecraft: The Story of Mojang has lots of behind-the-scenes footage, both for Mojang and its enigmatic creator, Markus “Notch” Persson. To better understand the full impact of Minecraft, it interviews people in the industry like Peter Molyneux and Tim Schafer, figures in gaming culture like Penny Arcade’s Gabe and Tycho, and even those figures who exist because of it, like Yogscast and The Shaft.

Previously, 2 Player Productions covered the chiptune scene in 2008’s Reformat the Planet. If you enjoyed the film, you can support it by either buying the DVD or the DRM-free download. There’s also the original soundtrack available, made by C418, the guy who did the music for Minecraft.
